Best Free PC multiplayer games?

I'm finally going to get into PC gaming. I have a pretty fast quad core computer but never really had a good video card to go with it and finally got one.

What are some good free pc games? Or hacked games that allow you to play online? I know none of the new stuff like COD:MW2 or L4D2 can be played online unless you actually buy the game, but what about others?

Yea I played portal on xbox, thought it was awesome. I've also played TF2, didn't really interest me a whole lot though.

I like cooperative and/or team based multiplayer games, like GoW, COD campaigns, etc. but also like the typical kill everybody stuff.

this is my favorite server.  always has the server count pegged.  they actually had to make a second server because of the overflow

i tried playing sand andreas mp befor and i remember being headshoted every 10 seconds, said it was gay and never looked back.

that's cause you didnt have any gangster rhmt og's to roll with.  its all dependent on which server you log onto as well. there are some that are all russian and shit.

This is the **ONLY** way I'll play this failboat. I'd never pay for lag, rampant cheating, and zero ability for modification. It's like the first MP shooter that didn't ship with any form of mod tools (for user-created maps or custom gameplay).
