« on: March 18, 2009, 12:26:35 PM »

Im looking for a good job right now and was thinking of getting my CDL. Was wondering if anyone else on here has a CDL and was it a good move.

At my job you don't need a CDL to drive a flatbed..   :)

Go drive a tow truck,  its easy and some places pay very well

26,000 GVW is the cutoff (for most states anyway).  Yes, you do get more money for hauling hazmat, but insurance is quite a bit more.  I'm an insurance agent and a lot of the insurance companies we represent won't even write those types of haulers.

But, if you go to work for a larger company they usually provide insurance anyway.  If you're an owner-operator for hire and have your own Authority for interstate driving, then you'll need to get your own insurance.

Federal government limits the number of interstate hours you can drive.  Everytime you go to a weight station they run your information and see how long you've been driving.  I forget the actual number of hours but you can find it online.

+1  When you're getting insurance for your commercial vehicle, insurance companies can also see activity on your personal record... I have a feeling that's bad news for some of you ricers with a bunch of tickets  :P

i have a class B, its pretty much worthless. only good to 32,000 IIRC. the class A with hazmat is the best route.

make sure to study your ass off, and do the pre-drive walk around exactly by the book

i have a class A, hardest part of the test is the pre-trip inspection. if you get the first wheel/brakes done correctly usually you wont have to do the other 17. hardest part about driving is shifting, dont even worry about backing up thats the easy part, worry about going forward.

I think all cop cars need to have turbo. nbspnbsp Then they would understand the necessity of putting your foot down and how uncontrollable the urge is to fucking rail on that shit.

I have class C. I drive a "school bus" which is a 01 mpv; easiest job I have EVER had. I get payed to pick up 4 high school girls to school and drop them off home. If your in school I would say go for that one. Was easy as shit to get, didnt even read the book. Plus it does not matter how bad the economy gets you will always have a job.

odd, last time i got pulled over the cop gave me a break because I have a cdl.

I got a class B when i worked for my township, so i didnt have to pay for a class or anything.  When I moved from NJ to NY, they knocked it down to a bus/municipal vehicle class b only since I didnt take the NY DOT physical.

I miss driving big trucks.  And to whoever said class b has a weight limit, what state do you live in?  The only weight limit i knew of was if you were puling a trailer too, which I guess is just to keep you from driving a tractor trailer without an A license.  I could certainly be wrong though.

The NJ written test was easy as fuck, i think i got one wrong on the whole thing.  What everyone said about the pre-trip is true, thats the big thing they emphasize.  I Just walked around the truck and touched/checked/named just about everything.  One thing they told me to do was to have a small pipe to whack the tires with to check pressure, apparently they like when you do that shit for the test.

Damn i miss driving big trucks.  Its a bit of a thrill riding down the road in something that weighs 40 tons.

agreed on the pre-trip.

i never used the clutch when i shifted, and in WA you get docked 1 point for every time you dont use the clutch(max of 5 points). so i basically went in knowing that off the top i was losing 5 points so i better do the rest of the test perfect. make sure to CONSTANTLY check your mirrors and pay attention to all road signs, especially weight limits and overhead clearance.

here i beleive a DUI starts at .05 if you are in your own car and get pulled over compared to .08 for non-cdl drivers, if your in your truck its absolute sobriety.
a state cop will come down on you harder if you have a cdl and get pulled over because you know you shouldnt be speeding/racing/ect.

Towdogg do you have to get your own truck or did they provide you with one. Also how did you get started in towing. You got me a little interested in this LOL.

I work for a tow company that owns their trucks, I drive their truck and do the calls they send me to...   Its not a bad job and like I said you can make alot of money if you find the right place and get your foot in the door.  Towing is easy as long as you have brain in your head.

At my job I kinda get fucked on the pay,  but the fringe benifits are kinda worth it!  Like right now I am typing this post from my house but I'm on the clock....

It started for me as a night job, back 4 years ago when I was a lubey at the toyota dealer during the day...  Now I tow full time and its ok but i'm getting tired of it..  Its making me lazy cause it so easy.

In Rhode Island you don't need a CDL to drive a flatbed cause they weight less than 26,000...

Likely the state you are in.  Here a regular driver's license is on a 12 point system, CDLs are on a 3 point system.  I've known a couple guys who have gotten seat belt tickets in lieu of a speeding ticket because they had a CDL (cool ass cop) but I also know a couple guys who are losing their license over it, one of which was told by UPS he's out his job when it's officially revoked.
