My DMM died. Help me find another one
« on: November 26, 2009, 03:12:12 PM »

the antique DMM i had died.  I need another one to diagnose a abs wheel sensor on an acura i just bought so the search is on.  Harbor Freight is looking promising.

what else is out there that is cheap, or is this one of those tools that you shouldn't skimp on.  if so, what do all the experienced electronics gurus suggest?  only requirements: audible continuity and must have plenty of functions.

well unless you can find another silly deal, then that's a bit out of my price range.

i only use a DMM when i need to, which isn't very often so top of the line is not required

Get a 15 year old top of the line bench meter.  It'll be about the size of a single DIN head unit and require wall power, but it'll be Quality and last forever.

Fluke (new Fluke is a huge step down in quality), Agilent, Tek, etc.  Log onto www.electro-tech-online.com and search for budget or cheap DMM, the 50+ year old dudes who have seen it all twice weigh in and give top notch advice.

JD thanks for the tip (and double post).  I'm really looking for something portable, as 7 times out of 10 I'm tracing wires in a harness inside the car to the engine bay or something along those lines.

all you need to do is check continuity?  Get a $10 multimeter from radioshack, or a cheaper one from harbor freight.

not ALL, but majority of the time.  definatley do resistance checks and well as voltage here and there.  I think the 25 dollar one from HF is looking like a winner.  I don't have a bench and don't really use one all that often, just when I'm having problems with electronics
