So apparently someone sat my Y8 head outside while messing with crap in the basement. It since got rained on and has some surface rust all over the internals. Any easy way to clean this?

dissasemble, soak everything in carb parts cleaner, agitate it, wirebrush what you can. towels, pipe cleaners, etc...just make sure you get as much as you can.

Install on d16 block. Apply wd40 liberally. drive for 100,000 miles.

Soak overnight in a tub of kerosene...

Then light yourself on fire. I'm not really sure what to do about the rusty head, though.

Jesus Christ don't listen to any of these morons they are giving you terrible advice.

obviously with the rust being on the head your going have to flush it out with some more water. remove the valve cover and your going need to use salt with the water. get some 200 grit sand paper and try to get the rust spots you see in the Valve train portion. after you are done, make sure you let it sit for awhile till and let it dry up. then BOOM literally it's done.

Surface rust is real nothing to worry about. Your main issue is the deck of the head being clean/uber straight yo. Besides that minor surface rust is nothing to worry about.

ya a friend ran a head that sat outside at a junkyard with some surface rust and gunk build up. just took it down to the car wash with some degreeser. then put some oil on it try to get what surface rust he could with his finger. then slaped the ho on. was more worried about the cracks that appeared to be forming in the head... it ran for quite awhile before other problems with lending the car to a stupid friend several times (always returning the car out of gas) and blew the motor rather then head problems.

Phosphuric acid, aka naval jelly. It converts rust into black iron phosphate. If you can't knock any big chunks down (scotch brite or brass/stainless wool), you'll need to treat it a few times. Just be careful of letting it sit on the aluminum.

LPS3 or CRC's product (I forget) will prevent any other change - you just need to wash it off with mineral spirits later. I've sprayed it over surface rust in a cylinder before, and it was like it time-locked that rust. Didn't disappear, but didn't change at all (no pitting after a few months). If nothing else, spray that shit on it until you figure out what to do.

i used to work with an aero mechanic who said the best way to clean the ports out was to dump rice down the carborator, i never saw him do it, ever. after seeing all the other crazy shit he did, it probably did work.

Its a head for fucks sake, unless it was stripped bare then assembled and moved outside I'd just install as is. Those parts should be covered in oil anyways. Any oxidation is minor.

Otherwise... Car wash it. hot water and pressure will take off any surface rust that matters.

then a light coat of moovit or wd40 or better yet 5w30 and turn the cam gear to make sure that nothing binds.

as long as the valve guides are not dry you'll be fine.

Ultrasonic cleaner. Or give it a good coating of 2050 and just roll with it if its nothing too special.
