The super slappynuts attack rabbit.
« on: November 06, 2009, 11:03:07 AM »

Yes this is my build thread. I have had the car a few weeks and I have started getting my make on. I am picking up the actual motor I will be using this weekend.

Pulled the motor after work and getting ready to paint engine bay this weekend. If all goes well I will have the trans mounts for the cableshift trans in and the mock up motor bolted in.

Made trans mounts to continue project.

And now you guys are caught up.

8v Counterflow on an 02A? Or is it an 02J picks are kinda blurry, and I haven't played with a vw trans in awhile.

The trans is a O2a. The motor thats in there is just a mock up motor. I am using a ABA crossflow with turbo. I am going to put some large injectors in it and chip tune it with a precision turbo (cant remember what was decided). I am trying to get 300whp and 350ft lbs. This is a very light car so it will haul ass like that.

I am picking up the motor tomorrow along with flywheel and starter.

Should probably put a D16 in it.

The stock 2l crossflow VW motor is a much better candidate for boost, much cheaper, and bolts in.

I know. They have a forged crank and rods from the factory but shitty cast slugs. And a d16 trans is probably on par with the O2A for glass components.

No way on the tranny. The O2a is alot stronger. The cast slugs in the 2l are fine if you dont detonate it. Alot of people use the 16v head on them and get lots of power. Most people lower the compression on these for pump gas but I live in a area where we get E85 all over the place so no big deal.

02a is a lot stronger then an 020, but about on par with a d series tranny. Lots of power on an ABA is a rather relative term.

O2A is a lot stronger than an O2O but it's still not a strong trans. 3rd and 5th strip pretty easy. They are disposable like D-series trans.

They are only a problem when the syncros go to shit and people dump the clutch between gears without having it all the way engaged. The O2a was designed for a 3000lb plus car as well and thats where the problem is. making any power on one of these cars puts extreme pressure on the trans. The civic generally weighs alot less. In the rabbit it will be inpossible to fuck up.

I fucked 2 up in 3 months in a stripped MkII golf. Not even big power. At least do the bolt kit.

I am probably going to use a ATB diff in mine as soon as I fuck it up. Yes the diff is the weak link.

That depends on which D-series trans you're talking about.

Making power with the ABA aint a problem.

For what its worth, the stock Mk3 trans bolted to teh ABA (code escapes me in my drunken moment) is of similar gearset size and input shaft diameter of a dsm FWD turbo trans.  Stock they aint shit.  But surely they can be modified to accommodate a lightweight beast like a rabbit.

I like that rabbit, but don't like this rest. D16 are super cheap, trans are cheap and vitaras are good over 400hp.

That motor with a good tune is good for over 400whp just the way it is. I am going to be running it @ 300whp and 350wtq on E85 (sometimes its good to live in MN).

I disagree. The bottom end is, and maybe as a dyno queen it is, but as a track car, those pistons won't live very long at 400whp.
