If anyone has links to various coils, COPs, as well as MAF, MAP, or other sensors for use with standalones or in place of factory pieces, link to it and/or provide a synopsis.

www.onlinecomponents.com usually has ecu connectors in stock. I bought a lot of 10 of them of the female ECU side a year or so ago for ~$35 shipped

www.newark.com sells the mpxh6300 3bar MAP sensors for $10 and change. They also have some AMP/Tyco connectors as well. Digikey is faster, but newark is usually cheaper.

These are the weird cayenne coil-on-plug units that we were discussing about a year ago Joseph, except this is the new design that wont bust.  I think we needed to get around the self-diagnosis thing that didnt work right?

That can be ignored completely.  The Cayenne COP offers the ECU feedback on dwell/charge so that the ECU can fine tune dwell.  The COP still charges and fires according to the ECU, so it makes no difference.

EDIS4 w/ COP

I'm running a Ford EDIS4 (electronic distributorless ignition system, four cylinder) ignition system on my 99' miata running MegaSquirt II Extra (MS2E). The ford EDIS4 ignition system uses a 36-1 trigger wheel driven by the crankshaft. The VR sensor reads the wheel and its signal goes to the ford EDIS4 ignition module. The module is the heart of the system. It reads the VR sensor to establish the position of the engine. The module has the igniters built in, and drives a pair of coils in wasted spark configuration. It also adjusts dwell automatically via current limiting, which makes upgrading ignition coils easy. If you aren't running boost, the stock coils will fire a .055" gap plug all day long. But with boost, stock coil pack sucks, so either get a MSD coil pack or switch to COPs.

The ford EDIS4 modules are considered bulletproof, as they've proven to handle high heat from engine compartments, vibration, water, you name it reliably with virtually no reported failures. They're almost impossible to kill and pretty much last forever. They have several fail safe features built into them. For example, if the coil wires short together, the module will shut off the igniters to prevent burning them up. It will also fall to 10* BTDC if it ever looses the timing signal from the ECU. And if your VR sensor goes bad (read, fucker is falling apart), it will still run below 2000 RPMs.

They are simple to wire up too. Three wires go to the coils, two to the VR sensor, two to the ECU, ground, and switched fused +12V.

You do have to mount a 36-1 trigger wheel to the crankshaft and build a bracket to hold the VR sensor next to it. This is the hardest part, but this is why you get 5/32 of a degree spark accuracy. Much better than belt driven shit which can be several crank degrees off.

You can get the entire system off of an old ford 1.9L escort in the junk yard, or a mercury tracer w/ 1.9L. The 1.9L is the only 4 cylinder ford out there with a tubular aluminum intake manifold, so it's hard to miss. I originally bought all the shit from one off of ebay for 50 bucks shipped, but I've since bought it from the local yard, $25 for the entire ignition system, wheel, VR sensor w/ plug, module w/ plug, coil pack, sparkplug wires.

I eventually put a set of COPs on. Bought the connectors w/ wire PICO part number 5713PT http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCO-5713PT/ from summit @ 4 bucks each and searched for "ford 4.6 coil" on ebay and bought the cheapest NEW set of 8 coilpacks on there, 85 shipped for 8 IIRC. All the coil packs for the 4.6 are made by the same company, in the same place, so "brands" don't matter. I have four extra coils and connectors….

These are actually designed for a two-stroke magneto ignition for Mercury Marine. Remove magnets and put a generous amount of high temp silicone under magnets. Make sure ground strap is taped in place.
Newest versions are made in China and use Stainless ground strap on magnet in place of brass on earlier USA made coils.

I have used these coils for decades and have never had a cracking problem when silicone was used. When sent to JGM for testing with then new CDI-8, this coil was best of all tested in ~1999/2000 IIRC.

Better results in some applications than COP pencil coils - especially high boost alcohol engines.

I have had excellent results using Magnacore plug wires. These are available in 8.8mm and 10mm sheath sizes - there is no difference in cores. Make sure coil and plug ends are correct. The MSD wires work well, but tend not to live nearly as long as Magnacore wires.

For commonplace use, looks like the Cayenne COPs reign supreme as they are cheap and don't need an ignitor or CDI box to work.   I've read a lot of glowing praise for CDI boxes + motorcycle coils in the past couple days.

Between economy and winter coming soon, motorcycle parts are being given away on eBay.  I think I'll stock up now for future projects.

For real. I have a set of cbr coils I paid $7 shipped for sitting in the garage.

The k-series coils aren't terribly expensive but I don't know offhand if they control dwell or not. They do have built-in igniters.

Most of the toyota coil sticks have a smart igniter built-in.

Delphi makes some coils with ion-sense output as well. They're used on 00 isuzu troopers and rodeos. I really want to find a way to make use of that....

Garbage.  I'd rather have a distributor architecture Honda with a $50 MSD Blaster coil and no ignition amplifier box.

BTW, I'm pretty damn sure you've seen some of the DIY CDI circuits, do you know anyone who's played with one?  If they don't totally suck it'd be nice to design a DIY CDI board and sling them.

Find one that works (comercially available one, DIY one, whatever), reverse engineer it.

Got a Crane Cam 6-hi with a timing retard w/ input from a map, rev limiter adj. on the box. I even have a cockpit mounted timing retard adj. knob for this box. All your if you want to do some reverse engineering.

don't know anyone who's played with them, but i do have the schematics for the MSD6A and the silicon chip multispark CDI somewhere. when i find them i'll host em and post em. probably don't want to mimic the 6A too closely, but it gives a good idea of how MSD did what they did.

I've not seen the Pelican thread before, and while the MSD 6Fail schematic is good to look at I can't recommend enough that n00bs not to pay it close attention because those things suck.  Good stuff, all the same
