Had Vista, all the bells and shit.
Caught nasty ass virus, that pretty much disabled all of the OS.
Installed Linux Ubuntu. Works, very basic shit.
Problems:
-Won't recognize dual screens, and every tutorial online is some JD type Linux dork that can only speak Linux, and not English.
-Firefox ALWAYS opens with the about:config that I did after just installing, and modifying the speed. No matter how many times I click out and clear everything, Firefox opens with my homepage as a 2nd tab, but with about.config as the homepage.
-Screen resolution has been set to the best of my (non) ability, and every web page comes up with tiny ass text that I can't read. View-zoom and it's good. Go to next page, and fucken small ass text.
Maybe burning the fucken computer will get the point across. GGRRRRRRR..

Stop downloading teh pr0nz from /b/ for fapping.

I've never had ONE of those problems with ubuntu. Which distro? I'm still using 9.10, as I've heard there are a few issues with 10.04.
Get used to it, you'll love it.

no porn? certified OG should know better

I've got 2 linux boxes (both Ubuntu) and they truly can be total cocksuckers to people not familiar with them.
With that in mind, webmin is the shit (unfortunately won't help your sorry ass though)
-
I think the virus came from my fucken kids learning how to get online without knowing how to spell, which leads to just clicking random shit for hours.

All roads lead to Rome.
Likewise, all superhighways lead to porn & viri.

Webmin FTW! I was using it 10years ago and still using it now :noel:

Linux is awesome!!!1
Srsly though, you just need Win7.

You want to serve web with PHP and mysql? ok click click click

apt-get install php5
apt-get install mysql
apt-get install zimbra
Webmin is sweet for something personal but I would not trust it for a production server handling other people's data.
A LAMP server can literally be set up in a few minutes without webadmin. Webadmin has had security holes in the past and will have more in the future. Same goes for phpmyadmin.
It IS sweet, though.
-
ubuntu is pretty forgiving with the install, almost everything works straight out of the box with recent version.
Webmin is great but I personally rather mess with the config manually and know exactly what is under the hood.

Yep.
I haven't used the GUI on my server for well over a year and have been serving the web and running the mailserver for months without touching it.
I'm considering upgrading it from the 8.04LTS to 10.04...
Has anyone used it and can point out some "problems?"
It will just be running rtorrent, php/mysql/zimbra/etc server shit.
-
That's good to hear, I setup a couple fedora machines (canrt remember which core) but what a fucking pain in the ass (at least to get them configured for theyre duties in the lab at MS)...
I dig linux though. Fast. Simple. SOLID.

i'll be upgrading my home ubuntu box to 10.04 today. Upgrades make me nervous, but I could give a shit if my home box breaks down.
-
Seems he's having at least one of your problems.

Let me know how it works out for you :P
Webserver?
Are you loading the "server edition?"
I hate upgrading too because it hardly ever goes too smoothly. Will definitely do a backup...

Strongly suggest to backup. Upgrade never really turns out good and sometimes a clean install could have save lots of headache. I also want to know how it turns out.

Fedora has improved a lot over the years, especially with yum. One of the big problem with rpm based distro, was stupid dependencies resolution. Currently rocking f11 on the netbook. I still don't understand why they choose to go with pulseaudio.
-
I always do a simple tar backup before even touching it :P
I've been wanting to mess with CentOS as that's supposed to be very good for webserver purposes, but am too lazy and Ubuntu works just fine.
-
Been running 10.04 since beta, every works for me and no issues.
-
I know your computer skills mang and I say fucking trash that shit and go with xp and install your drivers = magic, or my first love..

Im running a "workstation" version as a "server" at my house for PHP/MYSQL shit.

Let me know how smoothly it goes.
I'm grabbing 400gb of Bluray ISOs and such from mine, then will start the upgrade tomorrow. Still need to research how to back up the Zimbra configuration since it was somewhat of a PITA to set up for all the domains, although not nearly as bad as the "manual" routes for a mail server.

i really REALLY dont like ubuntu.

i really REALLY dont like ubuntu.
Why not?
I don't give a fuck about the GUI and only use it through SSH, and for those purposes it's been 100% stable.
What distro do you use? I have a ridiculous number of OS options for the server.
-
update to 10.04 complete. easy breezy

Reading comparisons of the two, I don't see any worthy reason to switch to Fedora. Especially since I'm already familiar/comfortable with Ubuntu.
Android on mine :P

This thread makes me LOL.
Stevemode asks for linux help, and everyone jumps in just to say how much they love linux, and completely ignore the questions at hand. Bunch of Jew
I am going to join the ranks of Jew as I have no idea how to fix his issues.

He was ask which distro he is running and never posted up, the fix will be a bit different depending this.

Yes, telling what video card and version he's using would be a good start O0
For the Firefox issue, install Chrome instead

Correction for the Chrome issue you will experience install Opera and thank me later. ;D
-
What Chrome issue? You must be thinking of Suckfari.
-
The biggest pain in the ass issue I've came across (which is peanuts by comparison to some of the issues with other os's) is how NO browser operates correctly with photobucket. You have about a 50% chance of uploading there, and if you try to watch a photobucket hosted video, the browser WILL crash. I can verify this with Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Konqueror (Kubuntu), and a few others I can't recall ATM.
10.04 MAY have corrected that, but I now it's been an issue with 9.04, and 9.10 (Jaunty, and Karmic).
Jorsher, do you know of a fix for this issue? I've done ALOT of searching, but all I can come up with is "oh well, it's an issue, deal with it".

The issue he will have with Chrome while using Linux, because he already can not figure out Linux.
-
To both of you, I don't use a browser on Linux. It's dedicated for torrenting, mailserving, and webserving. I don't ever leave the command line.
Kain or one of the others can probably throw something in. Photobucket works fine on Chrome and FF...in Windows. Dunno about Linux.
I wish uTorrent will hurry up and be ported to Linux... rtorrent + rutorrent webui is nice, but uTorrent is still better. Hopefully will handle multiple user accounts well....
-
What's wrong with transmission?

the majority of the problem is that people are assuming ubuntu is a real linux distro.
its about as real as a sundial used as a watch. its implemented in such a haphazard way that its just dumb.
stop trying to watch videos in Linux god dammit.
-
What's wrong with transmission?
Nothing, really. I think there's a CLI for it, but I have never used it and have only used it through the GUI. I don't like having to remote desktop to look at it and don't feel like learning how to use it through CLI (if it's possible).
I did have some problems with it in the past not reporting properly to trackers, but basically I just prefer rtorrent because it's simple and uses very little resources. The server is just a weak dual core with only 2gb of ram, so serving webpages while allowing multiple people to upload their torrents with it can slow it down.
I haven't found a torrent client yet that I like more than uTorrent. It's very small, very good on resources, and has all the features you could ever want in a nice layout. You can run uTorrent on Linux through Wine, but I don't feel like messing with it.
uTorrent has the best webui bar none.

FWIW... http://fedoraproject.org/ (http://fedoraproject.org/)
Pick up an inexpensive SATA drive from CompUSA and do a fresh, "live" install Fedora 12 (possibly 13 now...you can download either 32 bit or 64 bit "live" ISO and burn a cd or dvd to get it on your machine)) and make sure you have your latest Linux video drivers specific to either ATI or nVidia that have either been approved by AMD-ATI ... or nVidia. Install Compiz for the three-dee desktop utility first and THEN add in your additional monitor(s). Arguably ...UBUNTU has the best flavor of Linux for laptop installations... but for simplicity and ease of installation... I have had nothing but great experiences with Fedora Core and all the brethren that followed... The main problem with video set ups is that all the major video card makers are sucking on the M$ tit and have been late in coming up with the proper APIs and support drivers for the Linux Kernel(s). If you want to get more out of your 64 bit box... give this idea a try....
-
Sucking Microsoft's tit or focusing their effort on the OS that 90-95% of the world uses?
The people buying ATI and nVidia's top cards are playing games. People that play games are most likely using Windows.

I can upload with out issues, but 50% of the time it will still crash the browser.
Running 10.04

actually, nvidia programs linux drivers first.

is the browser to blame or adobe flash integration within the browser ?? I honestly don't have a problem watching videos on linux ( fedora 12, gentoo ). I don't use photobucket, but I just tried a couple of videos in there to see what was going to happen and it seems to have work fine for me.
