Had Vista, all the bells and shit.
Caught nasty ass virus, that pretty much disabled all of the OS.
Installed Linux Ubuntu. Works, very basic shit.


Problems:

-Won't recognize dual screens, and every tutorial online is some JD type Linux dork that can only speak Linux, and not English.

-Firefox ALWAYS opens with the about:config that I did after just installing, and modifying the speed. No matter how many times I click out and clear everything, Firefox opens with my homepage as a 2nd tab, but with about.config as the homepage.

-Screen resolution has been set to the best of my (non) ability, and every web page comes up with tiny ass text that I can't read. View-zoom and it's good. Go to next page, and fucken small ass text.

Maybe burning the fucken computer will get the point across. GGRRRRRRR..

I've never had ONE of those problems with ubuntu. Which distro? I'm still using 9.10, as I've heard there are a few issues with 10.04.
Get used to it, you'll love it.

Webmin is sweet for something personal but I would not trust it for a production server handling other people's data.

A LAMP server can literally be set up in a few minutes without webadmin.  Webadmin has had security holes in the past and will have more in the future.  Same goes for phpmyadmin.

It IS sweet, though.

ubuntu is pretty forgiving with the install, almost everything works straight out of the box with recent version.
Webmin is great but I personally rather mess with the config manually and know exactly what is under the hood.

I haven't used the GUI on my server for well over a year and have been serving the web and running the mailserver for months without touching it.

I'm considering upgrading it from the 8.04LTS to 10.04...

Has anyone used it and can point out some "problems?"

It will just be running rtorrent, php/mysql/zimbra/etc server shit.

That's good to hear, I setup a couple fedora machines (canrt remember which core) but what a fucking pain in the ass (at least to get them configured for theyre duties in the lab at MS)...

Strongly suggest to backup. Upgrade never really turns out good and sometimes a clean install could have save lots of headache. I also want to know how it turns out.

Fedora has improved a lot over the years, especially with yum. One of the big problem with rpm based distro, was stupid dependencies resolution. Currently rocking f11 on the netbook. I still don't understand why they choose to go with pulseaudio.

I've been wanting to mess with CentOS as that's supposed to be very good for webserver purposes, but am too lazy and Ubuntu works just fine.

I'm grabbing 400gb of Bluray ISOs and such from mine, then will start the upgrade tomorrow.  Still need to research how to back up the Zimbra configuration since it was somewhat of a PITA to set up for all the domains, although not nearly as bad as the "manual" routes for a mail server.

Reading comparisons of the two, I don't see any worthy reason to switch to Fedora.  Especially since I'm already familiar/comfortable with Ubuntu.
