I need em. I wanna see some different set ups, get some ideas. Im flipping my turbo around, and want a super simple route to run an open 3" downpipe.
-I dont really wanna go under the pan, cus I dont plan on a full exhaust, so I would rather have the clearance instead.
-Im really debating routing it out the bumper, but I have an ED, so Im weary on cutting a hole in the unibody for one, and for two, most 8-9" slicks stick out like 3 inches. I dont want a DP that sticks out 4 inches, and I dont want oil all over my slicks at 120mph...
-I was thinking about pointing it straight at the ground, but Im wondering if this would be a good idea as far as temps go, and getting exhaust out of the bay.
I guess Im leaning towards out the front bumper so far, but I want pics of other set ups, for inspiration. Set ups on a CRX or ED Civic are even better.
So post up!
-
Simplest open DP is one 90 degree bend pointing down and back
-
when i had my hatchback i had it aiming right at the ground between the motor and the crossmember. on my crx it went under the oil pan. its much quieter just aiming straight at the ground but exhaust will blow back in the bay. you shouldnt have to cut any body panels to go out the bumper on an ED chassis.
-
your doing it wrong aim up and chop the hood O0
-
Up pipe is the way to go these days.

You sir are 100 percent correct. send it up.
-
heat rises so it actually makes more power
-

Bump for 100% correctness. Put on a flapper good for rain or shine

i have even heard rumors of having a u-pipe helping with traction on launching..
donno it there is any testing to prove this right or wrong. But i guess the theory is that the down force from the direction of the exhaust gasses. ???
But i would also asume that that will disrupt the air wanting to go over the car and hurt the aerodynamics for the car. Once
again ???
I currently have mine open downpipe cut about 4-5" under the oilpan point towards the back of the car.. Once the car is moving i would imagine i'd have no heating issues. But at a standstill Yes!!
-
Exhaust might be good for 20 lbs of thrust tops.
-
I thought about the out the hood thing, but Im only rockin 3"... IMO, out the hood is for nogs with 4" pipes that have no room to go anywhere else. Plus this still gets driven on the streets, just not daily anymore.
And as far as not having to go through the unibody for out the bumper, I do. Intercooler and charge pipes wont let me go out the front and then to the side, and I dont wanna go under. Going where the washer reservoir was would be a REALLY tight fit, but probably possible. Itd just be easier to cut a hole I guess. I can always weld in a pipe where I cut the hole, like C-notching it, just with an O instead of a C. :)
Lets hear more, and post some fuckin pics damn it!

those with open downpipes-- how do you not get exhaust coming into the car when driving or idling? When I ran open downpipe it was pretty unbearable. Well, i dealt with it, but passengers sure didn't like it.
-
No kidding. I ran open downpipe for a day once and the exhaust fumes sucked big time. If you do it, I'd make sure you do it so you or your engine isn't breathing that shit all the time.
-
Exhaust might be good for 20 lbs of thrust tops.
If the exhaust weighs 19lbs and you're using the thrust for downforce... then yes.
:P
Stand beside the 60' mark when a side exit car passes by @ the 400 whp level. You can feel individual exhaust pulses against your skin from 50 feet away.
20 lbs thrust. Maybe more. Not significant, IMO.
-
Yeah it's a number, but it's not too significant on a I4.
-
Oh shit an air poof.
Say that to Goddard, motherfucker.

not significant at your power levels is correct. watch top fuel and notice when one cyl goes out the car goes to that side.

Me: Oh shit an air poof.
Goddard: apathy
DeLaval: FUCK YOU I know about convergent divergent nozzles welcome to a 3400% increase in air poof efficiency.

Ethanol smells good. :)
After re-evaluating, I have almost 100% decided upon going out the roof. :) Updates will come later, when i buy a welder and some more 3" piping.

i love this pic!! soo here goes

i have a video of this car and you can see the heat/fume stack about 10' above the car at the 18th mile.. i'm sure it helps a lil with helping keep the front planted.

This is exactly how mine is right now, 3" and resonated (Dynomax Bullet). But Im flipping the turbo so I can get a half rad to fit again, so now Im gonna go with a set-up routed like Dr. D Series below. My wastegate will be different (no dump tube, once I flipped the wastegate, its pointed straight at the hood, and 1/2" away from it), but I will have a similar DP (but 3" instead of 4)

I have wanted to run an up pipe but bein a street car also I was curious as to what we could do to keep shit from goin in it like rain and what not any ideas beside a flapper
-
Yeah, that's pretty sick that Miller found more traction to pull a time like that. 0.15 ET is a pretty big margin with how much harder it becomes to go faster.

hahah!! there has got to be something else that doesnt look so janky?
-
Simplest open DP is one 90 degree bend aiming at the ground.
-
Most power-making DP vents the exhaust past a bulkhead, meaning out of the engine bay. 20-40HP just for routing the dump tube past the oil pan.
I've seen an ED with the 3" filter routed through the driver's frame out to where the washer bottle used to be. Unless you're running 900whp, I wouldn't worry about the frame weakening from the hole. If nothing else, "plate" the surrounding material. Regardless, you still have the firewall, rear x-member, front x-member, and bumper support all bracing the front end. It's also a big square rail you're cutting into, so it still retains strength. Your biggest problem will lining it all up, and not getting any banging as the motor moves.
Cliffs: e-cutout out the side bumper. Preferably a good, reliable, and fast cutout like the throttle body cutout in my avatar.
-
Nah. Im seriously gonna go through the hood. :) Its a lot more simple, and will get the dump and the exhaust out of the engine bay, with next to no effort. Plus I like the idea of cutting the hood, rather than the frame rail. Its more easily replaced...
As far as motor movement, I'll be using solid mounts on the side mounts, this year.

What other people are doing isnt really my concern, other than the fact that it gives me an example or idea. Im not doing it to be cool. Its really just cheap and easy to make a 45* 3" pipe, rather than cut holes in my chassis to get it out the bumper, or route a full exhaust.
news flash: Im not gonna be the fastest street honda, so I dont really care to look like him EITHER.
-
i could imagine exhaust coming out of the hood is something cops would harras you about. right before i sold my car i got 3 to loud of exhaust tickets within 2 weeks. and 2 of those i was nearly idling. i was just trying to get to work everytime. it was full 3" exhaust. sometimes i wouldnt get shit and other times cops seemed to be fucking with me. even though it seems like a different cop everytime i get pulled over. the other day i got pulled over in my 84 supra with 3" and the cop was trying to filp me shit then as he let me go he said dont worry about it... i told him in the 4 years i owned the car ive never been giving shit for my exhaust.
-
It looks badass, but not really appropriate for something daily driven. I'd love to do it though
-
I got pulled over a few months back for my exhaust, the cop couldn't find anything wrong with it.. it contains all working components with no straight through mufflers (that he could see). He ended up not giving me a ticket for it and decided to give me a ticket for some tires with wear on the edges all while threatening to tow me. Yay VA!
wow, ive never heard of someoen getting a ticket for worn tires. i use to wear my tires till explosion. if there were no wires sticking out i didnt even think about getting new tires lol. one time i was checking the air in my tires at the gas station after filling up. i found one of the tires a bit low so i started filling the tire up when it just exploded right in front of me haha. another time i had a bad alignment plus wear on the tires i got 3 flats in one night. first flat i put the spare on. then i got two more as i was going home. that was pretty shitty because after putting the one spare on i couldnt drive to the tire place with two more flats.
