Open DP pics
« on: November 03, 2009, 02:30:06 AM »

I need em. I wanna see some different set ups, get some ideas. Im flipping my turbo around, and want a super simple route to run an open 3" downpipe.

-I dont really wanna go under the pan, cus I dont plan on a full exhaust, so I would rather have the clearance instead.
-Im really debating routing it out the bumper, but I have an ED, so Im weary on cutting a hole in the unibody for one, and for two, most 8-9" slicks stick out like 3 inches. I dont want a DP that sticks out 4 inches, and I dont want oil all over my slicks at 120mph...
-I was thinking about pointing it straight at the ground, but Im wondering if this would be a good idea as far as temps go, and getting exhaust out of the bay.

I guess Im leaning towards out the front bumper so far, but I want pics of other set ups, for inspiration. Set ups on a CRX or ED Civic are even better.

So post up!

Simplest open DP is one 90 degree bend pointing down and back

when i had my hatchback i had it aiming right at the ground between the motor and the crossmember. on my crx it went under the oil pan. its much quieter just aiming straight at the ground but exhaust will blow back in the bay. you shouldnt have to cut any body panels to go out the bumper on an ED chassis.

i have even heard rumors of having a u-pipe helping with traction  on launching..

donno it there is any testing to prove this right or wrong. But i guess the theory is that the down force from the direction of the exhaust gasses. ???

But i would also asume that that will disrupt the air wanting to go over the car and hurt the aerodynamics for the car. Once
again ???

I currently have mine open downpipe cut about 4-5" under the oilpan point towards the back of the car.. Once the car is moving i would imagine i'd have no heating issues. But at a standstill Yes!!

Exhaust might be good for 20 lbs of thrust tops.

I thought about the out the hood thing, but Im only rockin 3"... IMO, out the hood is for nogs with 4" pipes that have no room to go anywhere else. Plus this still gets driven on the streets, just not daily anymore.

And as far as not having to go through the unibody for out the bumper, I do. Intercooler and charge pipes wont let me go out the front and then to the side, and I dont wanna go under. Going where the washer reservoir was would be a REALLY tight fit, but probably possible. Itd just be easier to cut a hole I guess. I can always weld in a pipe where I cut the hole, like C-notching it, just with an O instead of a C. :)

Lets hear more, and post some fuckin pics damn it!

those with open downpipes-- how do you not get exhaust coming into the car when driving or idling?  When I ran open downpipe it was pretty unbearable.  Well, i dealt with it, but passengers sure didn't like it.

No kidding. I ran open downpipe for a day once and the exhaust fumes sucked big time. If you do it, I'd make sure you do it so you or your engine isn't breathing that shit all the time.

If the exhaust weighs 19lbs and you're using the thrust for downforce... then yes.

 :P

Stand beside the 60' mark when a side exit car passes by @ the 400 whp level.  You can feel individual exhaust pulses against your skin from 50 feet away.

20 lbs thrust.  Maybe more.  Not significant, IMO.

Yeah it's a number, but it's not too significant on a I4.

not significant at your power levels is correct.  watch top fuel and notice when one cyl goes out the car goes to that side.

This is exactly how mine is right now, 3" and resonated (Dynomax Bullet). But Im flipping the turbo so I can get a half rad to fit again, so now Im gonna go with a set-up routed like Dr. D Series below. My wastegate will be different (no dump tube, once I flipped the wastegate, its pointed straight at the hood, and 1/2" away from it), but I will have a similar DP (but 3" instead of 4)

Thanks guys! If you find more shots of upwards downpipes through the hood, post em up please!
