Title: Picked up a new winter beater/daily driver...PICS!
Post by: darkelvis on November 08, 2009, 12:33:21 PM
Got off work on friday, drove to Mankato, MN (5 hours away) that night, picked this up yesterday morning and drove home...averaged 14 MPG the whole ride home...not near as bad as I figured it was going to be.

I got those and the OE's with good tires on them...The OE's are going on, the Lexani/MT combo is going on craigslist, and IF I do get a set of rims for it again they will be flat black 17" none of this 20" garbage.

Just don't take it off of pavement

a hummer will do this

Brand New Hummer Breaks Down Gypsy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YacG9PkGtI#normal)

A jeep will do this

The Jeep Chrokee crash test (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciaSFORCr9A#normal)

also

You are aware that H2s are just redressed Tahoes right? ;D

I hope you got a really good deal.
Those are one of the most over hyped vehicles ever.

nah the h2 can do some stuff

does yours have the electric locker. with the push button on the dash?

They're nice pavement pounders if you don't mind the shitty mileage. Really creature comfort-y with loads of room.

Soooo a hummer in OE condition with 10 inch ground clearance will get high centered and fuck itself on a rock that is sticking up 18 inches that the guy shouldn't have been driving over in the first place...check

Jeeps can drive on hills...check

A stupid cocky fuck tried to turn his hummer into a boat and it didn't work and a jeep pulled him out...so?

Did you actually have a point or are you just trying to convince me that a 91 jeep shitbox would have been a better buy than comfort and luxury?

92CXyD- I've also got a Tahoe and they a little more than just redressed Tahoes, but I get what you are saying...I got a good deal, and it's fun.

the h2 is built on the chevy 1500 frame with larger wheels. so in theroy it is a dressed up tahoe. its noting compared to a h1. we have towed so many of these back to the dealer. i dunno, we dont tow to many 1500 trucks but they tryied to dress these up so much that it cause alot of problems.

i would of went with an esclade ext

Nah, I didn't mean to critisize, I guess I came off wrong. I'm just a die hard jeep guy, that hates hummers excuse for an "off road" vehicle. For what it seems you bought it for, I'm sure it'll serve you well. They are good trucks, they just for some reason are thought of as the end all be all 4 wheel drive.

stock for stock, i'd actually take an H2 over an H1. The H1's are so seriously under developed its rediculous. Underpowered, all that weight pulled by a 4l60e. They only thing they got right with the H1 was the independant suspension. The ONLY tough as nails independant suspension. Even though they have little to no flex, with the suspension setup and portal hubs, you have massive ground clearance. I got sick of H1's having to work on them all the fucking time. I did 6 years in the Air Force vehicle maintenance, and at any given time we had 2-3 of the hummers in the shop needing a tranny, or another 6.5 failure of a diesel. What's REALLY rediculous is even the up-armored H1's (10k plus with a turret) STILL ran the 6.5 n/a with a 4l60e. Those went through tranny's every other oil change. Even worse in the desert in the heat and high load soft sand puts on a drivetrain.

Wrong...
"The H2's final frame assembly is made up of 3 sections: The front uses a modified GM 2500-Series utility frame, the mid-section is all new and is completely boxed, and the rear section uses a modified GM 1500-Series frame which is upgraded for the 8,600 pounds (3,900 kg) gross vehicle weight."

As far as the reason you tow so many isn't because of the car...it's because some yuppy fuck spent 65K on it then thought it could drive through a lake, climb a 85* angle, and tow a fucking skyscraper.  It isn't the car it's the idiots that bought into the bullshit hype.

The reason you don't tow too many 1500's (which I personally disagree with, being a mechanic it's been the years of working on chev 1500's that paid for this) is because people buy a 1500 knowing it's limitations, if they are going to do a lot of towing/heavy working they get the 2500 or 3500.

Wrong. You just wasted your money

I do 3 of these pieces of shit a week. For as big as these things are, the interior space is cramped. I am 6'4 260#s, this is the type of vehicle I should be driving, but the drivers front is smaller than the rx7. All of the ones I do have loose as a goose folding mirrors and 2 have flaking chrome on the grill and mirrors.

Good luck putting a fucking adult bigger than kain in the back seat. And you only get 14 mpg?

More room in my girl's highlander (which also gets mid 20's going 85 on the highway).

The nitrous kit might kill the fuel economy a bit though, when it eventually gets installed.

Obviously its not bigger inside overall you cunt... but the drivers front seat dosent go back as far. The floor is a fuck up shape, kinda like a viper, so your legs get pushed together. And the doors are tiny.

That is your bail-out money put to good use.

Were you in charge of the fridge fund or what? First off, the overdrive trannys in up armored HMMWV's are 4l80E's, second the engine in up armors have been 6.5TD's since the mid to late 80's. I would take an H1 over an H2 any day, they are actually built to go offroad, not just to look like a capable offroad vehicle.. Sure, they are low on HP (6.5TD-190hp), but its a fucking diesel with more than 350lb ft/torque and 3 lines of gear reduction (trans, transfer case, hubs) and even the porky 1116's with frag 5 armor (12,500lbs) has more than enough power and torque to pull another at 45mph without overheating in severe heat. I definately agree that the suspension sucks, and they are over engineered and underbuilt though and they could have easily solved the majority of the problems with a 6BT (even 4BT) cummins TD and a pair of Dana 60 axles with portal hubs then dropped the floor a little to have more fucking room and maybemore than 4 seats...

What's REALLY rediculous is even the up-armored H1's (10k plus with a turret) STILL ran the 6.5 n/a with a 4l60e. Those went through tranny's every other oil change. Even worse in the desert in the heat and high load soft sand puts on a drivetrain.

Are you aware that probably half of the up armored ones are actually not built to be an up armored vehicle? That the shit was pieced together to meet a demand from disabled uparmored H1's?
And no, I wasn't in charge of the fridge fund, did that shit for 6 years.
A 6bt would have been a great choice, but the military wanted ground clearance. Know nothing paper pushers think that equals something, instead of a vehicle that could flex a little. ( as they sit, even with a 60 and portals, the independant would still have the advantage of actual chunk clearance because of the extra joints in the axles) The H1's have hardly any compression and very little drop, which is why you see most videos of them toting wheels all over the fucking place.
The military should have just had 4bt powered, and dana 60'd jeeps with some armor. Who doesn't like a fucking jeep?

the h2 is built on the chevy 1500 frame with larger wheels. so in theroy it is a dressed up tahoe. its noting compared to a h1. we have towed so many of these back to the dealer. i dunno, we dont tow to many 1500 trucks but they tryied to dress these up so much that it cause alot of problems.

i would of went with an esclade ext

stock for stock, i'd actually take an H2 over an H1. Ive actually heard Frame wise or structure wise those trailblazers are awesome, i would be willing to bet anything around that frame was ready to fall to bits after like 4 years just like any GM product but meh what can you do.

I had to laugh, the in laws have gone throuh 2 malibus in the last like 7 years and each one after like 3 -4 looked 10 years old.  Seats worn to shit, no paint left on window buttons, various devices not working or buttons broken.  So they went out and bought another GM, a traverse.  Refused to buy "Forgien" lol and the interior looks exactly them same.  just another varioation of the 1992 Corsica.

Total shit. feels like the seats are 2 pices of plywood.

wonder how much of their business is Blind loyalty to GM.

Yeah Ive noticed that stuff my whole life. And you putting it exactly that way made me remember why I started liking honda's when I was only like 12. All american cars fall apart and the interiors look completely destroyed within a few years. Honda's can be 20 and the dash and seats can look almost new.

I have an 86 Civic with a better interior than 95% of the 1995 Civics out there.  It's maybe average condition for that bodystyle.  The old Honda dashes don't crack, and the seats don't tear, and the windows still feel new/smooth going up and down.  A lot of 2001 Civics don't.

Honda makes junk now, same as GM.

What exactly make4s an interior look cheap?

Would you rather have a flashy interior that looks hot today, but falls apart within a few years, or one that looks somewhat dull, yet stays together for many many years?

I know people that have commented on the cheap interiors of Honduhs, yet their shit is falling apart after 6 years and less than 100K.

I agree with JD, Honduh stopped making really great cars a long time ago.  I like my 96 Civic quite a bit, but overall build quality is not nearly as good as my 91 Civic.  Haven't really been around the newest Civaks enough, but the EP3 seems to stand amongst them as a better quality car than its brothers and sisters.

GM has been great at putting expensive lipstick on a pig for many years.  People got tired of it.  Even the newer ones that I have been seem to have great initial quality, but once you see them with some miles on them, the gig is up.

I think we are talking about how well it stands up to time.  OBVIOUSLY tryin to say "which one is better" in terms of appearance is all up to the owner.

for someone who Shouts RICER all the time you sure do use a lot of RICER logic. stick to what we are talking about troll lol.

Line up 15 1995 civics and 15 1995 corsicas and lets start seeing which ones have working buttons, buttons with all their paint and or markings, cracks in dash, faded colors, rattles.  Not to mention the civic have had 15 year olds beating the hell out of em where corsicas have granny going to bingo and gettin their hair did.  parent n laws are in their 50s and had a malibu for 3 years on trade in the seats were torn, none of the window buttons were black they were the Glo in the dark plasitc stuff under the black paint.  Car looked like it was 10 years old.

but really you think this:

looks more thought out and constructed better than this?

I never said it was great, ASS, but compared to some of its closest kin, IMO, it is much better.

91 civic interior = cheap crap.

Sure is, but my dash isn't cracked, the headliner isn't sagging, and the door panels aren't falling apart.

Lemme guess, you want to compare an entry level car with a flagship of the same era?  You really are a foggot Johnny, and I mean that in the South Park sense of the word.

Most of the midlevel and better 1995 Chevys have crappy interiors.

Seriously, the argument is going to vary car to car, year to year, OEM to OEM, but Chevy has some of the absolutely worst interiors ever ever ever.  They've cleaned things up a lot in the last decade, but holy shit Johnny were you drunk and inbreeding the whole of the 80s and 90s that you can say the things you do?

From a functionality standpoint, yes.  From a glued on fake wood dash facia that looks great to someone who's never seen a real wood dash, that starts peeling off after five years like some VWs, no I guess it's not as nice.

Ergonomics has as much if not a whole lot more to do with it in my mind that whether or not the car came with leather seats and doo-dads you don't need.

Yoseph, I do not like VW's, yes I have built lots of parts for them and owned a few as well but I do not like anything about those cars, the only mild attraction is the small 4cyl turbo diesels.

I like 80's mercedes interiors, they aren't like bmw's with all sorts of fancy doo dads, they are basic and clean. I like the 190e 2.3-16 Cosworth interiors, as well as c4 chassis s4 and s6 Audi interiors, both in black leather. They don't rattle and buzz like Honda interiors of the same age, not to mention having little to no road noise.

Not even fucking close. A honda with 500,000miles is waaay on the brink for the vehicle, in every aspect. A w124 chassis turbo diesel benzo with 500,000 miles has never had a head gasket done, because it never needed it, and the interior will be quiet and rattle free.

After taking an '87 300TD w 300k+ on it to mexico and back(~3800 miles) trouble free, I have to say the build quality on them is superior.  Not sure why we're comparing them to hondas.

80's Honda interiors rattle about as much as 80's Mercedes.

96+ Honda chassis... Soichiro was on his deathbed and the K-series was already laid down on paper.  I don't like them, either.

Like I said, varies year to year, OEM to OEM, model to model.

Not even fucking close. A honda with 500,000miles is waaay on the brink for the vehicle, in every aspect. A w124 chassis turbo diesel benzo with 500,000 miles has never had a head gasket done, because it never needed it, and the interior will be quiet and rattle free.

All of the 400K+ Hondas I've seen were the 80's cars, save one.

Headgaskets aren't interior rattles.  Quit changing the premise of the argument.

At 200K the '86 Si has no interior rattles.  The '86 carby Civic I had 10 years ago didn't at 250K, either.

After taking an '87 300TD w 300k+ on it to mexico and back(~3800 miles) trouble free, I have to say the build quality on them is superior.  Not sure why we're comparing them to hondas.

Have you read this thread?  We are comparing them because Passenger compared them.

i'd rather daily an ew4 than lots of cars, rattles or not. those engines sound so friggin' awesome when you put your foot in them, and handle fantastic.

Good grief Joey, I am not changing the premise of the argument, I am explaining the overall build quality. You aren't going to find an 80's honda with over 500k on the clock without major rework throughout the entire vehicle, not to mention the interior.

BTW I originally meant to type w123 benz, not w124, but the w124 are still damn good cars as well.

Goddamn it I am trying to argue with you on the internet here.  You being so reasonable makes it no fun at all.  NO FUN AT ALL, SIR.
