when is it really necessary, I've heared both good and bad things. We are getting ready to get back to the father and son build and just wanted you  O0 opinions

Only damps when the the engine is running. So I guess it only helps when the motor's running. I'm sure every OEM car in the world installs them for no reason other than to increase their cost in the engine.

Stay OEM.  Proven track record, cheaper, guaranteed to have timing marks, and the other stuff has no proven performance value.
