the only time i would water cool a turbo is if it was a daily driven ball bearing turbo. race cars and journal bearings, waste of time and clutter in the bay.

+1.   Porsche has run oil cooled only turbos for many moons.  Turbo failures are not common.  I plan on removing the insane number of cooling lines in my 951 just to make it easier to work on.  Cant do anything on that car without busting open the system.

Ok thanks guys! I just want to get it done as basic as possible less to go wrong  plus I'm being lazy.  I'll just run them then.

running garden hose for your return line is ok, but not running water lines is bad?

I've had 5 turbo setups, all on DD's and NEVER hooked up water cooling and NEVER had a turbo go bad.

you say "piece of mind" but 2 more links in your cooling system is 2 more links in your cooling system that can potentially cause problems.

and btw, it's "peace of mind" goddamnit grammar fucker.

fuck the water lines, they clutter the engine bay, and giving that you are asking about running them, probably means you wouldn't be able to hook them up correctly.

I'm not a complete idiot I just had never messed with a water cooled turbo. I really didn't want to run more lines then I have to. Now I know, so fuck em they staying unhooked! Thanks again guys.

I am the opposite, if the turbo has the capacity to be water cooled I run the lines, but then again I run turbo's a little harder then most, as I doubt any of the rest of you are pushing an hx-35 to 52psi, with 2000+ degree exhaust temps, or a 4088R to 65psi..

yes you are.

a non-water cooled turbo has larger oil passages and iis designed so the oil actually cools the turbo.

on a water cooled turbo there are coolant passages  (that will end up just being filled with hot INSULATING air) and pinner oil passages.

if you care about the turbo use the water lines.  if you want to fit in here, leave them unhooked.

i know what i would do....

I would run the water if possible. Otherwise an oil cooler would be a good investment.

Timer + 5 speed = not a chance I want to take.

its only a turbo timer not an actual remote start unit...

Yeah, but Porsche makes an engineering effort to make sure the turbo can shed it's heat.  Most Hondas are 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag with an IC blocking 90% of airflow to the radiator, if it were mine I'd run the water cooling.  It's not the end of the world if you don't, but well worth the extra $30 and an hour to implement water lines correctly.

Correct, motor oil is part of the cooling system.  It's just oil breaks down quick if you get it too hot even if your temp guage reads "acceptably", coolant doesn't.
