a Need to Vent
« on: January 06, 2010, 09:29:53 AM »

So i got some 10" Infinity reference series speakers that ive had since like 03 or so.  they have held up well but i have a bad tendency to push every damn thing i own to the brink of destruction.  So they are rated like 300 RMS or something and have a peak of 1000  ::).

Any-who, i got a Kenwood 930 pushin it and it beats pretty hard for the Shitty ass deck i got em hooked to with no EQ or line driver.  well at first i was pushin it with a 500 w (or like 200 if you live in the real world) Jensen and it was pathetic so i bought the Kenwood.  I think they made it a week before i blew the Wires off the voice coil.  so i bust out some extra wire and solder and whatnot and fix em.

then rinse and repeat about every 4-6 months until present.  naturally it only happens on Morning like today were i feel like if i don't fill my face with ridiculously awesome loud music my head might explode.  So i toss in Rising down from the roots and like 5 seconds into the first track i remember how awesome it is and naturally it gets turned up.  and peace out right sub.  so now i got no bump until i unscrew my damn speakers again and re-solder the goddamn lead on it.

Im on my second goddamn speaker box cause ive unscrewed them so many times.  anybody else have to constantly fix or repair shit cause they absolutely refuse to turn the amp down?  When they are workign its nice to put out a cig lighter in the driver seat for peanuts.  I dont have shit for money in it.

Cliffs:  Infinity speakers are pushed far beyond what they should take and spit out voice coil wires in protest of noggin splitting sound.

it rips the wires off the leads?  add an extra inch of wire, coiled, for stress relief.

Times is tight.  i might come tax time or possibly summer but now that i got teh boy i have a hard time justifying buying shit like that for myself.

I guess if im not willing to buy new shit i need to smarten up and dial it down a tad so i can still rock em for a few more years.

and i did.  i patched like an extra 2-3 inches in there lol.  It blows the solder off now lol.  ive put them damn things in there abotu 5 different ways, had a few audio pros at my local shop check it out and tell me how i should but they still seem to blow off.  they got a metal cone and rubber blatter so literaly they are hard to blow.  they extend so far out the basket its just to much i guess.  fuckers come like 2-3 inches out.

It was a 2005 RE XXX 15 with 2400 watts RMS going through it.

I threw that bitch out of the back of the van while it was on fire.

Gee Goly damn.  Ive never been a fan of anythign bigger than 12's.  i listen to hip hop and like the low bass but i listen to just about anything from Dizzy Gilespe, The Roots, Robert Cray, At the Drive In or Man o war so i tend to find that 10's or some 12's sound best.

If you're rocking out tight bass is where its at but i bet that 15 would make you want to puke it hits so hard.  Its fun to watch the quarter panels on other peoples cars flexing cause of their sub's, its just too much for me lol.

With the right box, you would be surprised with how tight the bass can be, even with 18's.

It was replaced with this:

It's no longer a daily driver.

Solder, which is not a mechanical connection, is cracking from fatigue and parting?  You don't say?

Mechanically secure the wire and then solder.  Make sure the solder doesn't wick up the stranded wire, under the sheath, as it will make the wire brittle.

Hmmm.  i never put that much thought on it but yeah it makes total logical sense.

Damn.  i shall Zip tie that fucker and resolder carefully.

Clean the lug out if its a ring lug and wrap the braid through the ring  two or three times neatly and then neatly wrap the wire around itself a  few times like a noose.  Gently pull the lead to snug it up and allow the wire to bite the post. Solder.

crimp the wire, then solder over the crimp.

Also, turn the gain down a little.  You're probably driving them until they start to clip.  I've had no problems with my kenwoods, and I beat the hell out of them.

They dont clip/buzz or distort any they take it like good little sluts.  they just blow teh damn leads right off the Voice coils.  The lugs are cool i have no issue with them its off teh post that leaves teh lugs that connects directly to the lead going in to the Voice Coil.  I bust them shits out.

I really need to upgrade my wiring considering im running like a 900 wat amp through a 500 watt kit.  all my wires have that sweet bubbly look cause they have gotten so hot the melted the wires. lol.  if you look at the sound deadener it has a trough that the wire has melted in it.  In the box itself i have the packing peanuts melted to the wires hahahaha.

Fuck it, its a volkswagen, its either gonna burn down itself or burn down cause of me.

crimp the wire, then solder over the crimp.

+ 10^23

Heat the crimp in the dead center, introduce the solder there.  It'll slip through the crack and wet the inside a LITTLE, all that is needed.  Going from one of the ends potentially lets the solder wick up under the wire's cheath and making a brittle condition all over again.  Copper is pretty flexy and malleable, but cracked solder puts it in shear across a small crossection and at that point it fatigues and breaks quickly.  Keep the solder INSIDE the lug so it acts as an electrical connection and can't confuse the mechanical properties of the wire.

I'd go so far as to try and drill a small hole in the center of a crimp, make it easier to get the solder inside.

I get what you are saying, my issue is the post coming off the lug, not anything with the lug or leads from the box to the lug but it doesn't matter i can still do what you are saying.  I put a quick fix on it for now as my wire needs to be replaced and I wanted thump in the trunk so fuck it.  I'll get myself some properly gauged wire soon so i don't burn my shit down then do both speakers correctly.

I saw no solder up the wire or in the wire but it is brittle as hell.  not sure if it did in fact wick some of it up in the 78065 times its been soldered or if Ive cooked the shit so much its now brittle but either way.

So essentially the crimp keeps it from wicking eh?

I should have known the little ass 12 gauge or whatever it is wasn't going to be enough for 900 watts.  even if it is Pheonix gold.  gauge is gauge and power is power.

No, not at all.  In fact, the solder wicks up inside the crimp.  Here's the rub: the crimp is 1000 times stronger than a couple strands of copper wire to the solder performs no mechanical connection and just dones an electrical connection.

The point of the crimp is to support the setup and keep the wire/solder combo seperated, which is why you solder it and the very tippy tips of the wire inside the crimp and NOT the wire itself.

Now, go fix the boom in your dub, and Henry us on a new topic.

I know, which is why I kept at it until the concepts clicked.  If I was less honest I would have lied to you the first time around in a manner that would have explained everything perfectly to you, but sadly we are doomed to miscommunicate like this for the rest of our lives.
