ecu work stand
« on: August 01, 2010, 04:48:58 PM »

just curious if anyone else has done this. i have never seen anyone talk about it, but one night of chipping i decided that i needed a stand so i built this out of some 1/2" square tubing i had laying around and stuck some rubber feet on the bottom. i wish i had done it a long time ago. i cant believe how much faster and easier chipping goes now.

i also dont give 2 shits what anyone thinks of the blue paint. i had some left over in the gun at work and did this at the same time

I like to work over top on an almost flat surface. But I like the idea

I use the spring loaded solder sucker so I have to be able to get to both sides at the same time. I used to solder everything in with it laying flat on the table, but once I got used to this I like it better.

thats pretty sweet. I would build one that rather than flat i would lay it vertical and be albo to lock it into say flat 45 90 45 and flat again. i bet that would save time over holding it between your legs haha

Looks good. I use a dremel vise for most of my board work.

the best are the ones that swivel in any direction.

i used one to build my megasquirt and it was a lifesaver.

I really haven't had a need to do anything but spin it on the base. I also only work on Honda ecu's. Hopefully I can assemble an MS unit for a turbo cafe racer in the near future

Does the stand bolt to the table or does it just slide around?

it has rubber feet to keep it from sliding, but nothing securing it to the table. it works surprisingly well. so far i havent wished i had done anything different

I think I would be annoyed by having to bolt it into that framework.  Tossing one around in my lap has worked great so far for me.

Hey, maybe you can make a couple and sell them, use the money to buy a desoldering iron?  That's going to be my next purchase, they rock.

Not a bad idea. I would really love a desoldering iron. The $5 radio shack solder sucker has never done me wrong but it does leave a bit of a mess to clean up. I do my best to make my chipping look factory.

Not sure where there would be a market for that though since everyone here can weld. Maybe I can just chip enough ecu's to buy one. That business has picked up around my area quite a bit.

Make a YouTube video of the stand in action, and throw it up on eBay.  Rinse and repeat.

Thank you, but I agree that your internets are best spent elsewhere.

Chris might not buy them outright, but he'd be happy to do a consignment deal for the first few so you can both see how they sell.

Sell 5 to Chris Harris!

With my luck he would sell them to some Canadian for $20k who would then patent it and proceed to ruin it.
