Cracked manifold advice
« on: September 11, 2010, 05:00:29 PM »

Installing a new compressor on my wife's civic Lx and found this shit peaking out from behind the heat shield. Fuck.

I'd like to MIG it but I am not %100 on cast. I know to drill the ends of the cracks, notch the cracks, and to heat it. Question is can I use a propane torch to heat the area, or is that not hot enough? Also can I heat one side (in reference to the o2  sensor port) at a time, or is it critical for the entire piece to be hot. I have a charcoal grill. I'll bbq this bitch in a heartbeat if I have to. Thanks.

Dude just use as much heat as you can and weld the bitch shut. It'll be fine and do the job for another 100 years.

I wish. There's no civics around here, and I'm trying to get this thing back together asap. Car's going to LA in a week.

Can I really just weld it? I thought cast likes to crack.

Fluxcore madness complete.  :)

Wasn't as bad as I thought. I drilled the ends because I'm chickenshit, and then just hit it on wtfo on my little 140amp. I was a little apprehensive when my root pass crazed.  :o I just figured I should have pre-heated it and the cast was pulling it apart. I  switched into glue-gun mode and everything went good after that.

I was all worried about the cast. Never thought the weld would be the problem. ??? I left my auto hood at the shop too, so I had to do this shit one handed with a jumbo plate in one hand, and my hair melting off. ;D

Thanks.

Couldn't quite get the landing right after a few fill and grind runs so I grabbed an old crush washer from my s2000's diff out of the catch pan. Shit fit perfect and sealed everything right up.
