Anyway to bench test alternators?
« on: January 03, 2012, 04:07:23 PM »

I know take it to the parts store to get tested but I dont know how many times one place says one is bad and take it to another store and they say it's good. I know how to do it on the car but I get tons of parts cars that are missing parts/stripped etc so I cant just test them the old fashion way with the engine running.

I know you would have to excite the coil initially with 12v but i would think you could spin it with a drill? idk it would be hit or miss

spinning it with a cheap a/c motor would be easy. i know you have to give it a signal to make it work. it also needs a load or it will burn itself up. my neighbor rebuilds alternators and does all of mine, ill ask him whats involved

Use a 12V motor to spin it. I know, brilliant! Now the trouble is to get it spinning... ;)

All you'd need for a load is a headlight or two & a car battery. I'm sure you can find some of those.
