1/2" thick flanges? would you pay a little extra?
« on: March 30, 2009, 10:44:09 AM »

i'm going to be getting some 1/2" flanges soon and was just curious if anyone would be interested in them or be more inclined to buy 1/2" over my standard 3/8" thick flanges.  obviously the price would be a bit more since they would be thicker, but also because they will most likely be waterjet cut instead of laser.  i know a lot of people want the 1/2" so i'm stepping up to meet the demand, just want to gauge interest.  they are probalby going to be around 50% more expensive than the 3/8".

I have an upcoming cummins project, and 1/2" would be my only choice.

I only use 1/2 for head flanges.

1/2", hell yeah! Might need a new intake flange from you if you're ready now.  ;)

I dont understand why people think they need 1/2" thick flanges. Unless you warp the shit out them when welding and need the extra meat to grind off.

Well in the case of the cummins manifold I am building, @ 3/8" it will warp just under the 1800+ degrees F of egt. After all it is like a 4 ft long head.

Is there a large space between the bolts? Another thing that would be a plus in your case would be to leave more material between the ports.

Aaron - Most common 1/2" flanges we sell are turbo inlet/outlet flanges. We do some head flanges in 3/8 and some in 1/2 but people don't seem to care either way most of the time for those.

I just did 2 manifolds using Weir's 3/8 head and turbo flanges - no problems for me.  Is there anyway you can offer both?  I think the reduced cost helps us DIY guys a lot more.

oh, i'm not going to stop making the 3/8" flanges.  just want to see if it will be worth while to do 1/2".

thanks for the input adam.

All the 3/8" flanges I have used have been just fine.  I would probably continue to just order the 3/8 as I dont see a need for the thicker flanges for what I am doing and dont think I could justify paying 50% more for them.  my .02

I would rather buy 1/2" flanges for my first try at migging up a manifold, would have less of a chance of warping shit.

Well it's a 4ft head with 6 ports, so yeah there is a fair bit of space, it will be a solid flange, just cut for ports and holes. It will be milled after it is welded. Oh and this isn't my first dance.  ;)

half inch flanges seem kinda overkill, three eights look pretty beefy.  i suppose if you can use half without any problems, why not?  bigger is better.

Well I know the grass is always greener, but worst case you sit on them for a while. Its not like they take up space like a manifold. I'm guess you're just hoping to get a better quantity discount on the steel (not that I blame you)?

I've used 1/4" flanges for shit before , and managed no warpage, so 1/2" is overkill at least for Hondas IMO.

Keep in mind you might start to get some warpage with laser cutting on 1/2" flanges, there is going to be much more heat input on the material.

And a cummins head flange is like 26.5" IIRC, I still use 1/2" flanges for them though.

It isn't that they warp so much as looks for me. i like the looks of 1/2"  and so do my customers.

aaron i talked to you about these before, nice your getting around to making the 1/2" flanges.

the only retards who think 1/2 is necessary for manifolds are honda-techers.

by the way all those sweet CNC'd 1/2" flanges are really only .450 thick because they loose .050 getting milled flat because they are made from crap hot rolled. ill stick with the 3/8 joints for 50% less  :noel:

aaron just make sure they use the same steel on the 1/2". look how baller your 3/8" flanges welded tonight  8)

Depends who you get them from, I mill mine from crs. I prefer milled flanges not only for aesthetics but the fact you can pocket the flange as well to help get rid of some heat. Really though, 3/8" laser cut flanges are fine.
