Sleeping
« on: January 12, 2010, 03:17:56 AM »

I used to sleep like a dead hooker, but lately I've been having a hell of a time trying to sleep.  I took some tyleonol PM, NyQuil, and had a few drinks tonight.  I figured that would put me to sleep.

Besides jacking off and smoking weed, what do you guys recommend?  I hate not being able to sleep.

Melatonin?

So, you pretty much got banned for being yourself   :P

I would be willing to try sleeping pills (if they work), but I am not much of a smoker.

I'm in your boat.  Picked up a memory foam mattress to help, but I need to get used to it.  It's nice to lay on awake, but I have trouble getting to sleep on it.  Needs to break in or something.

Booze helps, on bottle #4 of of my sixer of negra modelo now.

Try binge drinking. 24 shots of cheap rum in an hour and I was out by 1130. I haven't drank today, which is why I'm still up @ 330am.

Try eating healthy, nutritious food, don't take naps if you do, lay off the caffenie at night. Do you worry alot? Like just lay there worrying/thinking all night? I know a lot of people that do that. Kinda have to train yourself to sleep by making habits of things you do before going to bed. Like turning off the TV everynight an hr before bed, or havinig some mik 30 min before bed, etc. After about 3 weeks, your body will figure out that turning off the TV = get ready for bed and you'll fall asleep faster. Supposed to work anyways. I changed my diet from eating shitty food all the time to eating decent food and pretty much no soft drinks and I sleep great now compared to before. (been working for over 4 months, haven't had a problem sleeping one night)

Don't go to bed unless you are very tired.

Wake up early if you believe that sleeping at 1h00am is not cool.

Calcium help to sleep. Liquor too.

If you are smoking weed and you have the luxury of picking through strains.. Definitely experiment with "OG" strains and Kush varieties as these tend to do the trick when sleeping and stay away from sativas at night. Also over the counter 5-HTP helps bring back the dreams.

I do worry and think about things I need to get done.  When I can focus on nothing I tend to fall asleep, but it's getting my brain to STFU.

No soda, no TV in the bedroom, no caffeine after noon, I drink a fair amount of booze though.  I was reading that if you are a heavy drinker and fall asleep when drunk, it's more difficult to fall asleep other nights  :-\

There's some good info here: http://www.helpguide.org/life/sleep_tips.htm

I read a much better article on sleeping several months back, but can't find it now. I'll post it if I do though. I used to be like you, I'd lay in bed on average 1.5- 2 hrs every night before my brain would finally slow down enough and I could go to sleep. And then I didn't get enough sleep, I was tired the next day, and the problem compounded. I did a lot of reading up online looking for things to do to help me sleep. Some worked, some didn't, but now I can go to bed and fall asleep in about 20 minutes on average.

Like I mentioned, you have to train your brain to go to sleep. This is what helped me the most. Like making habits of things you do before going to bed. The link mentions some things. I find that turning on some relaxing music an hr. before bed helps me the most. I also did some things to get the room pitch-black at night, and this helped too. Again, these things may not affect you at all. Different things work for different people. It takes a few weeks to train the brain to recogize them too, so don't expect to crash the first few nights you start doing them and then decide they don't work.

I also mentioned eating good food. This helps with a lot of other things, and can also help you sleep. Probably not the most important as far as sleeping goes though, but it helps me feel better when I am awake.

I'm a known insomniac so probably not the best person to get sleeping advice from...

Anyway I use melatonin.  It doesn't make you tired, which may be why it didn't "help" whoever said it doesn't do anything above.  You still have to try to sleep.  Most people, including myself, experience more vivid dreams when sleeping...  The back of your eyes naturally metabolize serotonin to melatonin when you're in the dark (or eyes are closed).  Computer monitors and every other source of light prevents it.  Take 3-5mg of melatonin, try to sleep, and when you eventually fall to sleep you will wake up feeling more refreshed than easier, most likely sleep with fewer interruptions, and as an added bonus have some lucid dreams.  Taking more than 3-5mg of melatonin isn't going to make it "work better" so don't waste your time/money.

Pot obviously makes me tired, but not til I'm coming down from the high.  While I'm stoned, I'm more awake than ever and stay up late being entertained by music/games/movies/whatever.  Once it starts to wear off, I pass right out.
'
Pot + alprazolam/xanax (probably any benzo) will knock me the fuck out.  I used to have a xanax prescription, I'd snort one or two, smoke, and pass out.

Alcohol helps but supposedly negatively affects your REM sleep, which is the important shit, so it's not my method of choice.

Exert yourself during the day so you're tired at the end of the day, take a melatonin a half hour before bed, then go to bed and try to sleep.  Don't expect it to make you feel tired, it just makes you sleep better once you get there.

look into DSPD if drugs dont help much.

one night i took a whole bottle of tylenol pm, what was left of my temazepam, all the booze in the house, and i dont even remember what else because i couldnt sleep. this was after i had about five hours of sleep in three days, and after i saw a doctor to get help. doctors dont know shit about sleeping, even if you do all there tests and shit, there still going to jam drugs in your face. then there going try different ones cause those didnt work, then different "combinations" of shit that also dosnt work. DSPD is way under diagnosed because no drug (melatonin is somewhat effective) will help it, so no drug company is pushing it as "the new disease"

do you think any doctor ever heard of restless leg syndrome before they had a drug to treat it ?, fuck no, they just ignored it and called it insomnia or a mental disorder even though it was discovered to be its own disease in 1945.

most of this shit has no treatment yet, but with the drug companies funding all the research, i would bet the treatment will be drugs, lots of them.

if you think you have DSPD, use melatonin to try and regulate things, if your delay is severe (more then 3 hours) try staying up all night on the weekends, or work swingshift if you can. taking Ambien or any other sleeping pill when you have DSPD is like getting shit faced at 3:00 in the afternoon, if you want to sleep, you would have to take so much you pass the fuck out, and thats not the same as actually sleeping.

i found out about DSPD by looking up sleep disorders on wiki there is whole bunch of them that doctors dont know or care about, you should look into them. loading up on stimulates and staying up on the weekend helped me the most, making sure my alarm went off the same time everyday helped to, i dont know why, might be conditioning or something. also some studies find that placebo works almost as well as the sleeping pill over time, the act of taking it makes you sleepy.
