Something Different TWO STROKE TURBO!
« on: March 29, 2009, 12:53:18 PM »

This is a Artic Cat M-1000 it has a 1000cc 2 cyl. 2-stroke and with a few simpal mods it will put out 180 HP.  I am going to set it up to run AV fuel (it is cheep here) and see if can get +300 hp out of it, to bad winter is over

To start with I needed more fuel going in to the motor and wanted to run a piggy back setup and use the stock fuel map so I glued some extra injectors on the T-Bodies.

First I milled a hunk off

Because you get such a long intake pulse with a 2-stroke you do have to run a big plenium this is what I fabbed up, My welding is getting better.

I upgraded to a Walbro 255 HP pump and I machined a dome to mod the stock regulator into a adjustable risining rate regulator.

I missed taking pics on the other stuff I fabbed up but here is the turbo settup, I still have to build a cold air intake and tune it better. It putting out aroun 250hp at 6 pounds of boost

Good to see you found your way over here. What ever happened to the yamaha? Though this is a way cooler project yet then that.

Pretty much need a dyno, or a big lake, where you are making fresh tracks. I have ridden a couple NA 1000's and they are bordering on nut bar, that thing must scream.

I never seen eny thing rip like this a 5 pounds of boost,

check out the before after pic of the turbo

The dumb ass cheap filter is no were to be found

fuckin filter and over sized zip tie....................... MIA.. lol

The thing did rip and  I dont think I have to spend a lot of time fixin it so all is good.

Before

After

Pretty much all the stuff built on this thing was copied from other turbo kits, I think the the kicker here is the external waste gate and how it flows so smoothly into the muffer

low boost it moves.

Dang, I guess you never got that memo. Better to go with nothing than mesh, especially when using a cheezy zip tie. Good thing you didn't use metal though. That plastic & nylon probably just squished in the cylinders rather than crunched.

That's fucking cool, way cooler than most other things here - and not simply because its the only boosted sled so far.

Looks like it fucked up the compressor wheel pretty badly.  :(

Well that is a pricey way to learn, I love the standalone oil reservoir for the turbo. Now you just need a tarmac setup and runner at Castrol.

You could probably buy a non turbo sled, turbo it, and make some good coin off of it, especially now that you have done a couple.

How is that M1000T to clutch?

Oh, and I got Hit with 25cm of Snow on Saturday night - Sunday morning.  :P Places just south and west of me are reporting as much as 45cm.

I don't think the turbo is wrote off, two fins are a little bent on the ends and one is chipped on the edge, it looks bad in the pic. I'm pretty sure I can straighten it out and half ass balance it. Time will tell if it holds together.

Clutching has been easy to tune 290 grams of weights and it pulls 8000rpm at 5-6 pounds of boost the fuel has been a little tricky.

I herd Calgary got dumped on this weekend we did not get any.

oh i see now, i thought that tank beneath the turbo was something to do with the oiling system for the engine,  pretty dope idea.  i wonder how good that setup would be for trail riding, or is it strictley for ice drags?

One measures exhaust pressure, to much ex pressure over boost on a two stroke will kill off the pistons.

It is a Facet magnetic piston fuel pump it cranks out a wimpy 4 psi but works on a full ball bearing turbo, I have used ithem before for a return pump on a rear mount turbo. I got it from NAPA I think it was around 65.00

I am pretty happy with this setup, the exhaust runs 3.5 psi over boost, you build pipe pressure first to spool the turbo than it will stay at 3.5 pounds over boost to about 12 pounds of boost, I have not had it up that high yet.  If your exhaust pressure is over 6 psi over boost it gets hard to tune, a 2-stroke has no exhaust valve and you are not getting the heat out of the cylinder and you start detonating or melting pistons becuase you can get it to run clean with a 1300 degree exhaust temp.  :o
