my brain hurts.
« on: January 22, 2010, 12:20:00 AM »

So I've been doing homework all day and now im doing a math test.
Can anyone confirm if x2 +7x-9 is prime? Pretty sure it is as i cant think of a way to factor it, but im going on 30 hours with no sleep so it wont hurt to double check.

Why don't you use Maple, Matlab or any other software?

In real life, it's very useful to know what are prime numbers. Really.

Its factoring, you dont need the value of x nor do they provide it.

Only 2 ways to get nine by multiplying: 9 and 1 or 3 and 3.

Funny you mention that I have Maple 10 and Maple 11 like the software for some simulation.

Didn't know Maple 11 was out. Maple is a nice math tool.

Matlab is fucking powerful too! So polyvalent.

Eh, I'd probably use synthetic division to show that you will always have a remainder, thus making your original expression prime.

I could be way off base here, but it makes sense to me, and I am sure there is a simpler way.

its eaiser if you write it like this

integral_(1/2 (-7-sqrt(85)))^(1/2 (-7+sqrt(85)))(-9+7 x+x^2) theta(9-7 x-x^2) dx  =  -(85 sqrt(85))/6 ~~ -130.6102

college math 101 or some such thing. Haven't taken a math class since my sophomore year in high school, which was like four years ago, so i'm a tad rusty, that combined with lack of sleep going on 35 hours now, makes me a little slow.

By applying the Quadratic formula you get two possible ans.: -15/2, 2/2.

Since prime numbers are positive integers that then the ans is one get one prime number and a negative rational number.

When I worked in a math lab, for a semester, I would see a whole bunch of problems with teachers that would word things weird (as though the student was on same wavelength as the teacher) and confuse the students on simple problems.

My job would be to translate the crap the the teacher assigned to the student. :?:

Then I would be able help explain the problem. ;D

Try being out of school for 8yrs. then jump into Calc.I.
I did it successfully but I had to spend a lot time studying in the math lab.

And after 2.5yrs I have an A.S.Mathematics, A.S.Physics, and A.S. Engineering degrees. ;D

It's one thing to be not know math, its another not to know how to use google.  It's also a bit of bullshit that you can't be bothered to write out the answer correctly.

x^2+7x-9=0 is what you should have typed.

http://www.mathwarehouse.com/quadratic/quadratic-formula-calculator.php

So no, the answers are not prime.

I don't think the question is whether the factors are prime, but whether the polynomial itself is prime

Not every expression in math is an equation.

Its one thing to be not know English, its another to misunderstand the question.
The question is not whether the answers are prime, as there are no answers, thus why i didn't put an equal sign. If it had been equal to zero i would have put that, so please don't assume you possess intelligence when clearly you are lacking.

Correct, which it is.
