I bought a replacement for my rusty hf a little while back.  It's a shiny hf.  However the previous owner had a k series motor in it  ...  In order for the k shifter box to fit under the stock console he notched the trans tunnel. 

I'm putting my d in it and need to weld an original tunnel back in.  I'm lazy and don't want to remove the interior.  I'm thinking I may be able to use this tape over the seems to prevent slag from setting the interior on fire...  If I lay the beads from under the car.  I'll probably also lay a welding jacket over the tunnel too...

Have any of y'all used this stuff before?  Does my plan sound solid?  Do you know of any places to get this stuff cheaper?

The main intent of that tape is to reduce carbide precipitation by minimizing the amount of oxygen present on the backside of the weld seam, the thermal barrier portion is shit.

Get a friend on the back side of the weld seam with a nozzle and compressed air, stitch weld your seams and in between blow the air on the seam, you will be surprised how quickly the material will cool down. Do not blow the air while welding.

Why not just get heavy duty seam sealer or something? I mean it works for every joint on a Lotus, why not for a Honda's shifter plate?

Actually if you want to go through with it, soak the flamable parts before hand. Then stuff a butt load of fiberglass wrap between weld and interior, or even some chunk of nomex. Basicly something that chars/sublimes instead of burns/flames. You could use that fire blanket stuff plumbers use (ceramic insulation), but it's usually severly overpriced. Test it before you torch the interior.

This is already part of the plan.  I did not intend to lay beads all the way around...  Like passenger said stitches, then seem sealer for the rest.

That's what I was thinking with the leather jacket.  I like the fiberglass/nomex/ceramic idea.

I'm currently very limited with my workspace.  I'd rather remove the interior...

Remove both seats then reach under the carpet to space it up with something, 6-8" air gap will be easy.
