DSM tuning info
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:50:06 PM »

it looks like i will be tuning a DSM in a couple weeks. just wondering if anyone has any good info that i need to know since all of my tuning experience is with hondas.

its a 100% stock 4g63 with AEM and a map sensor rather than MAF.

i am pretty sure it has a different manifold and quite a bit bigger turbo, massive intercooler etc.

he is also running a water/meth injection setup. i havent messed with those either. i have done little google searching, but the info i can find on the water/meth isnt consistant.

As long as you have no sync or timing errors, should be pretty straightforward.

Water/meth likes to run down the first and fourth runners, letting the already hotter than average second and third bake.  You'll be taking up to 5 degrees out of the center two cyls if you are pushing your octane limits.

this guy basis his goals on psi rather than hp. he wants to run 30psi on the street with 93 octane and the water/meth.

i will keep the 1/4 cylinders in mind. i think i remember reading you say something about that a while back, but didnt care a lot cause i had no plans of messing with DSMs or water/meth at the time.

at that psi, what kind of timing do you think i could expect?

if i can do what they ask without engine damage, i do it and take their money weather its the right way or not. i prefer hp goals myself though

DSMtard is about the most fitting nickname I've ever heard in the automotive world.

I didn't think so many people could be so fucking stupid.

Just make sure you set the base timing right, that'll be the only tricky part with the AEM.

Also, maybe getting it to start first crank.

Since it was a Honda example, I'm glad you ignored it based off of it being all about DSMs.  Piston engines operate by different sets of physics when manufactured at an adjacent plant on a very small island, brilliant observation.

Right up there with Honduh kid, IMO.

it was interesting, but this is the first time someone has ever mentioned tuning water/meth to me or a DSM. didnt seem useful to me at the time. i may go searching now

All knowledge is useful.  If I had the ban button right now I'd give you a week, and Slo two for being cheeky about begging basemaps.

Best way to set base timing on a 4g63 is to have a timing gun with dial-in advance set to 5* and line up the cam gear tick marks pointing toward each other.  The cheesy plastic lower timing cover is a joke, and you will never get it dead on using the method in the book.  There is a connector on the right side of the firewall that needs to be grounded while setting timing, but id image AEM has a provision to 'lock' timing at 5* to set base.

Wait, is this a 1g or 2g???

I hate how dsmtards think that because they run 30-40-50psi that they are making more power, when in reality they HAVE to run those boost pressures far right of the map to make the same power as engines with more effecient combustion chambers and port velocities.

Yea, he is running 30psi right now and making 370whp. I just tuned a gsr that made 420whp at 22psi
