Name one place I am exposed to the "news," Levi.
I manage to make it through each and every day without hearing the news, what do you mean bombarded?
OK OK, you are part of the small minuscule percentage of the population that are not sheep. But you get the idea of where I am coming from, the average regular US Citizen is what I am referring to.
No, disagree. The typical American doesn't pay attention to that shit, either. You just don't get feedback about that because you are in a foreign country, and among "plugged in" active internet participants it's much more common to meet the news media reactionaries.
While our apathy is not admirable, the sort of verbal diarrhea from an overwhelming minority of Americans that you base your stereotype off of is very much not your average American - they are just the internet personalities that stick out in your mind, and nothing more.
- individuals becoming healthier and smarter only seeks to gain a better society
The leading cause of death in America is no longer heart disease (from crappy food and lack of exercise) but obesity (from widespread ingestion of crappy food and lack of exercise). It's pretty much common sense that small children know, eat right and exercise or you become unhealthy. Yet people still go down this road, why? Because we are given handouts and exerting any effort seems unreal - refresh yourself with Tim's post on the irrational sense of entitlement in this country.
We have health care. I can go right now and obtain free doctor visits without enrolling in government handout programs, there are multiple medical charities locally. If I am in a medical emergency I am by law entitled to medical care that I can not afford. For 90% of my lifespan, I will not and do not require these things to be healthy. I will live to my mid-60s with no medical intervention whatsoever, guaranteed by modern nutritional abundance and my family's medical history... at that point I either die of cancer or become a 85-95 year old with a 50% chance of Alzheimer's.
We have a functioning and affordable educational system. It is possible to afford a four year degree from a decent school off of a McDonald's paycheck with minimal to no student loans (rawr is the definition of minimal loans, I am the definition of no loans). The root problem is entitlement, no one wants to work that hard. Everyone wants to go to an out of state school at ten times the expense like it's a big fucking vacation, and proceed to bomb out of their first year by partying on some else's dime (parent's, student loans that don't seem real to twentyteen kids, etc).
I have a full span of life in which to obtain education, and earn the money with which to purchase healthcare above the minimum should I care to acquire it. So is every other American I have ever met. The reason the system doesn't work is no one feels like working.
What will handouts solve, Levi?- Obama is trying to fix Bush's fuckups
- US is in retarded amount of debt
There's a difference between trying and knowing what the fuck you are doing. Also, Obama's only creating debt by breaking campaign promises (continuing Bush's economy destroying war) while throwing money around like it's not real. Have you seen the HUGE increase in budgetary spending since he took over? Obama has decided Reaganomics was for the cautious, and it's pretty fucking scary.
While I cede you that some aspects of socialism are feasible, I posit two reasons why it will doom this country to failure:
-
Obama is the one introducing the socialistic aspects
- Nobody wants to work for anything in the current culture. If no one is working, where does the money come from?
What we really need isn't more government intervention, what we need is a Second Great Depression where people get off their asses or die of starvation in order to revitalize our society. Hopefully the completely incompetent die in this process, thereby removing themselves from the gene pool of a bright, new future.
