ive been told by people who have attended, its not a bad class if you know nothing about tuning cars, and interested in learning/buying the motec. lol.

I was under the impression that it was designed for folks who have little to no tuning experience. So yes probably a waste of time and money. I doubt they teach anything you couldnt learn from a book and a bit of hands on time on your own.

DMC1, has anyone ever asked you to provide proof that youve attended a 'tuning school'?

I've never been asked about EFI certs, but people keep bugging me about being AEM certified. Sad thing is EFI 101 covers more meat... AEM cert is sitting in a room while some dildo goes through all the pull down menus, no verification of theory or testing invlolved. Dunno how they do it now but 4-5 years ago a hobo could have walked in the door ("class" was free) and gotten AEM certified.

depends. I sorta look at the 101 'cert' like a ase cert. Somoene who has been dealing with brakes for 10+ years goes and sits in the ase class, plays with there cell phone the entire class, walks out with a cert is now all of the sudden a brake bad ass because he has a ASE cert. Same goes for the efi 101 cert. If somoene walks into a shop with a dyno to get there car tuned, and sees that the operator/tuner has a efi cert, that might mean something to that person who drops there car off at a shop looking for a 400hp number. I know and you know that you dont need a cert to know anything, but to some people, it might mean something.

If I wasnt paying for it, i'd be all over it, unless someone is going to require me to go.

Yea i get mixed reviews about it its $445.00 if you sign up in advance and $495.00 at the door. Im not really a fan of the classroom type deal. i guess after the book work you go to the dyno and watch a car get tuned. Im really looking for the 1on1 hands on tuning lesson or ill just wait for JD's Class.

ASEs mean you can fix a Cavalier, or other GM product. Most automakers are dropping ASE testing as a requirement to become factory Master Techs.

Also, I don't know of a single tuner ever asked if they had EFI U certifications. It's been discussed. If I wanted a "career move" I'd fly to Cali for my AEM cert.

What im saying is, like, joe schmo goes into abc car repair for some brake work. joe schmo doesnt even know that brakes require fluid. he looks on the wall and sees all of these 'certs' that abc's employees, he will probably think pretty highly of the shop.

Same goes for having your car tuned, IMO. These guys at work are sending there cars to various shops to get a "stage 3 turbo, but a stage 4 intercooler, and stage 17 injectors..so a 101 cert on the wall might mean something to those dipshits.

Nobody has ever asked me for an efi cert. My main intrest in going would be to see some hands on stuff and hear Ben Strader talk about theory.

As someone who tunes cars regularly you'd be suprised what you can learn just by watching another tuner go through there thing. Ive been lucky enough to watch dave tune a few times and trust me I' m in shut the fuck up and soak it all in mode because it's the little things in tuning that make a big differance.

I look back alot on how I tuned a few years ago and I think I'd never let that guy touch my car I know so much more about what I'm doing now. But then I get the thought wait a minute I sure hope I look back on today a few years in the future and think the same way about my tuning level right now. There's always more to learn and don't be arrogant about who you learn it from.
Shit Ive learned more from old v8 guys at the track and old school V8 websites about engine theory and tuning methods then Ive ever learned from the import crowd excluding two people one of them has posted in this thread.

Ive had this goal of learning more then I knew yesterday pretty much my whole life. If $450 dollars teach's you something and you take it away and rock out somebodies car with it you'll make it back ten fold. (ive made more money from tuning then Ive ever spent on car parts for myself).
It's a great little ace to have in your back pocket. Ive been broke and no way to make rent in time and check the voicemail and just like that I'm ahead again.

I'm'a tell you how you impress your customers. Well, this is a different business but it works.

I was getting estimates to get some body damage fixed on my car and I was checking different places. Insurance was paying for it, but I wanted to find the RIGHT shop that I knew would do a good job. I basically showed them the car, then started questioning them how they were gonna fix it. And I'd look at what they were currently doing to see if it looked like they were doing a good job.

Then I walked in this one place. Old run down looking shop. I walk in, and there's a huge ass wall full of before/during/after pics. 4 pics per vehicle. Hundreds of vehicles. I checked those out for a while, then talked to the guy that ran the place and I knew they'd be the best.

In the same way, I think having certs. would be good to have. And I'm sure you'll learn something out of it.

Every time I see him with a lap top with in eyes view. We both are in the HEY YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP mode. I like Dennis he isnt too serious in life but when it comes to cars, family, and money "Not in that order" He is a great friend and educator. Tuning is something thats on my list of things to try to learn, Im good with the mechanical work, but when it comes to tuning im like a fucking new born, always have been. I give props to you guys who do it and know your shit.

If any of you go to an EFI class... show up early, ask if you can help. Stay after and sweep the floor (I did). It's not always Ben teaching the class (I'm sure they are ninjas nonetheless) but if they are anything like him they answer your questions or more importantly (like Dennis said) tell you about what they are currently geeking out on. That shit is the coin of the realm, my friends, there is so much you can infer from a handful of sentences... and if you're bright with the correct knowledge you can actually take a more experienced tuner's ideas to the next level just because you saw some shit, fixed some wierd problem, he'd never seen.

Kevin is a tuner at that shop, the last I knew. There was a day I was at his house, 5 days out of the week, prior to Okinawa. I come back, try to get ahold of him...was told 'things have changed' ...never heard from him again.

idk. tried to call em up, like a day after I got into town, posted up on the forum...never heard from him again. Saw him at the track, gave him the whats up, and he gave me the nod and kept walking. I was going to buy a shell from his buddy, who also works at that shop...he was the one that told me "we're a little different than what you last knew us as...things have changed"

guess I dont fit into his catagory anymore. I never lost any sleep.

Odd, but people who go out of their way to own Mk4s are. I can understand IS300, SC300, even Mk3s, etc, but the Supra stuff is meh.
