Yeah, get 1-2 packs of HF Electrodes and practice starts with a few cfm's of airflow. An HF 1" belt sander will also come in handy for grinding the points.

I cannot scratch start to save my life.

If it doesn't have a foot pedal i can't do it.

Yes, i suck.

It's probably because i'm  spoiled and got to learn with the pedal.  Scratch start pissed me the fuck off.  I'd always fuck up the tungsten and the arc would wander all over the damn place and i'd have to fuck with the machine.... I hated it.

Scratch starting is easy. Takes some practice and the tungstun will never get dirty. You just have to be quick with it and stop taking your time.

Skill that i lack.  On/off switch with modulation is what i like.  Throw in an auto darkening helmet and it's cake.

I'm lazy.  Just thought i'd throw that out there.

im a retard and i managed to get some nice scratch starts... (for some reason arc start didnt always work)

just get a super fine point tungstern nice and sharp and when you touch and pull back your good to go..

what i did was i did like 3 or 4 fake starts then on the 4th or 5th touch id kick on the welder just before i touched..

so you get a hang of the touch..

touch pull touch pull touch pull touch pulll press the foot pedal touch pull..

prolly overkill.. but worked like a charm everytime...

that new HF Tig looks pretty nice. I used the old red one for years and it worked great.  Like the fact that the gas fitting on the back now threads in.  Also having the read out is nice too (if it reads out something useful like amperage)  Old HF tig only had a dial that went from 1-10, not very helpful.  Over all was a great machine though.  As far as the Thermal arc I have never heard anything bad, but no experience with them myself.  Have to say the HF tig was the best tool I have ever bought from them to date.

Also if you get the HF tig, first thing you should do is take the torch to your local welding shop, get a gas lense for it.

Filler is cheap already.  I'v heard of people using coat hangers but not really a huge savings.

dont use fucking coat hangers, that defeats the whole purpose. just check out craigslist, about 2 times a month some guy has a shitload of filler for super cheap.
if you cant wait, go to harbor freight and buy a spool of MIG wire, not fluxcore, and just straiten it out and use that. its about using purified metal, you dip a coat hanger in the weld pool and its probably going to explode into soot and flame like crazy.

Yeah i spose i would use what i had laying around too if i needed something fixed and had no rod.

Just go buy some 1/16th rod it's dirt cheap for how little you need for most things. If you buy stainless rod and are a cheapass you can use it for anything.
