1990 accord auto trans issues
« on: March 16, 2010, 10:54:20 PM »

A friend of mine bought a 90 accord dx for $400 the issue it is having is the tranny doesn't want to shift. The speedo didn't work when he bought it but we put a used speed sensor on it and it worked for a while anyway. it seems to be stuck in high but seems to go down into 1st if you put it there manually. From the reading i have been doing the s or d4 light should be blinking but the s light doesn't seem to even work. What are the odds that the tcu is bad? Or the other 2 speed sensors on the tranny?

goto the j/y and get a tcu. also i dbout this is your problem but my friend had a 92 accord and that piece of shit was so slow and shitty with the automatic it would not shift right and would be gay all the time. we hollowed out his cat and it worked fine ever since. check the trans fluid though and see how that looks

S should come on solid and D4 blink if it's in limp home mode.

Pull the ECU/TCU "plate" up out of the pass floorboard, see if the TCU has an internal LED.  Some do, some do not.  If it does not then you need to power one side of a test light and run it to the D4 pin on the TCU, and check for TCU codes.  Getting the codes is absolutely mandatory, do NOT fuck around.  While it's most likely in limp home mode (no codes) due to the TCU being a cap leaking pile of shit brought to us by the same people who made DSM ECUs, I have seen people run themselves in circles trying to fix a defective TCU that wasn't defective.

LMK what you find, I have a 2/3rds rate of fixing those stupid fucking things when - if - they go bad.

No cat on the car. The fluid looks a bit toasty and smells a bit burnt but not too awful bad. We are going to change it today and pull the tcu codes if we can. I just talked to him and he said the S and D4 light where flashing at him on his way home so at least we dont have to pull the cluster to put a bulb in the S light like i thought. Im betting on a bad tcu though. Also he said every once in a while the speedo would quit and the gas gage would go to full. If you shut it off and start it again it goes back to normal  :?:  Hope there isnt some weird ass electrical issue with this thing like i had with my 92 civic sedan. on it the alt would only charge if the cruse control button was on 0-o.

JD: I will pull the codes today and get back to you. If this thing is gunna be a bitch im just going to recommend that he converts it to 5 speed.

It won't shift manually with the TCU in limp home mode.

Caps leaked all over the place, dropped the resistance across the two 15 ohm current limiting resistors until the whole works got hot and melted down.

Which control unit do you have, anyway?  I might have one laying around, that might work too.

Well we picked up a tcu at our local wreckers for $35 and the tranny shifts fine now :P The tcu had a different color label (silver) but plugged in and works fine. It was out of a 91. The speedo still has issues where it doesn't work all the time but it might just be a crappy sensor. All in all not a bad $400 beater for my buddy. And when ever he is done with it i can get it off him for cheep haha.
