Vavle springs and retainers
« on: March 17, 2010, 03:04:18 PM »

What is the general consensus with replacing Honda valve springs..... are stock retainers and keepers cool?

I just want that little bit more insurance for a new cam, but not in the mood to track down a set of keepers and retainers.

Its for my D16

Alot of the time the springs are designed around the companies retainers hence why they are sold as pairs by many. keepers you keep stock

I have friends running stock retainers on Crower springs in Z6/Y8.  Your mileage will vary.

Thanks

The two things i was mostly worried about are:

1. Any difference in hardness wearing one part abnormally?
2. Are the specific spring diameters (either inner or outer) and installed heights generally the same for OEM and aftermarked honda valve springs??

I do drive the car so they will be used.  I am looking at some cresposcams springs..  Those blasted Argentinians never answer their phones though...and i'm impatient.   Also
"High Lift Valve Springs" isn't enough info to make an informed purchase.

I have seen alot of valve springs destroy camshafts and oem ones at that. Trust a company that answers a phone call/emails. Buy the crowers.

Not in my experience, which for non B-VTEC is pretty much limited to Crower.  I've been through other cams, but it's not like I knew the owners or ever heard back from them... that's one downfall of running someone else's dyno for them and letting them interface with the customers.

2. Are the specific spring diameters (either inner or outer) and installed heights generally the same for OEM and aftermarked honda valve springs??

It can be close.  The stock Z6 retainers on the Crower springs look like they are a 0.020" smaller OD or so... but they seem to seat and hold fine, so go figure.

I ran ZEX/Comp springs in my Z6 with stock retainers, worked great.

FYI, Z6 and Y8 valve/spring/retainer/keeper are all the same thing.
