D17a1 compatibility questions
« on: March 18, 2010, 01:37:00 AM »

How much did honda change things from the d15/d16 to the d17?  I want to do an auto to manual swap, and my g/f's coworker has a totaled 2001 civic dx in his driveway that he is just going to scrap.  Will the tranny, shift linkage, flywheel, or axles (or anything else I might need) work for my 95 d15turd hatch?  Would it be worth swapping in the d17a1 at all?  This is just my dd beater, and will be the recipient of a b18 swap someday, but probably not for another year or two.

I believe it is all do able except I'm not completely sure about COP and how it interfaces with OBD1 ecu.

I'd ask JD about that.

And the ECU would need a D17 basemap .

As far as the trans. I think the trans., clutch. flywheel, etc. is all interchangeable. Based on I see tons of parts marketed to D16/D17 for the clutch and flywheel packages all the time.

If it has low mileage go for it. If over 150k miles then I'd check the rod and main bearings since the d17 oil pumps or not as good as a z6 pump. :?:

And z6 pumps do not d17 cranks.

Not sure on the axles at all.

There's a dist flange on the side of a D17 head, whether or not the cam has a dist drive is going to be the deal breaker.

I'm real not sure, never looked underhood on one of those, but are they cableshift??  I either read something about that somewhere or I smoked some good crackrocks this morning.

Also, oilling system is shittier than D16Y.  The extra stroke in the crank is a contributing factor.

I saw a build on D-series involving addressing the oiling issue. I believe it was in a build thread called D18.

No clue.  I have a friend with a 1.7 crank in a Z6, Crower stage 2 NA cam, big 16G in an RT4WD wagon.  He used the D17 oil pump and an LS crank pulley, so far so good.

I'll keep looking I guess.  I'm not really set on the d17 swap as the ole b7 still gets around pretty good, but I need to figure out for sure if I can use those parts for an auto to manual swap.  I think I'll take the seats out of it at least if they feel comfier than mine.

You can put a distributor on it but really that's more hassle then its worth and they are cable shift.

So does that mean I can't use the tranny?  Never seen the cable setup, what are the chances that a shift linkage will bolt up to it in place of the cable shit?
