Dodge OR Ford
« on: March 29, 2010, 11:29:20 PM »

Well nogs.... I'm looking for a truck.
Preferably a 4dr crew cab, box big enough to fit a snowmobile (strapped down hanging out the back) and enough power to tow a trailer with 2 more snowmobiles.

I know almost fuck all about trucks so my ears are open.
I will be rebuilding it (bought from an auction after an accident)  so this will make my budget go much farther.

I'm thinking f250 or ram 2500,  diesel and only diesel  ;D

I know, completely useless and you are asking for legit help.  If I had something useful to provide, I would.  Since I don't, tire smoke will have to do.

If you are rebuilding it anyway, get an F-350 crew cab long box 4x4 srw, and swap a cummins in. Best of all worlds.

Realistically a ford ranger, or chev s10, or vw jetta tdi, will do what you are asking of it. I am building a two place aluminum sled trailer for my jetta right now.

I was going to get a 4 runner but the 3.4 v6 seems a little small (wont get any thing other then the 96-02)

That 4runner would have no issues at all pulling 4 sleds, even on a normal steel open deck sled trailer, it would only be 3000-3500lbs max including the trailer. With a nice Aluminum trailer and not heavy ass 4 stroke sleds you could be as little as ~2500lbs with 4 sleds and trailer.

Back to diesel trucks, what is your price range? Or are you going to finance a new truck?

Also if you do spend the money on a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, spend a bit extra and get a sled deck.

Up to 7k ish so that would be like 15-20k non rebuilt.

I would get a sled deck but a place to keep it is the problem.
I have a underground parking lot in my complex that i could store a trailer or 2.

So you might be able to find a CR dodge, or your into a 6L ford. Dodge auto with anything more then stock power will need serious help. Ford 6L right off will need an EGR delete (go see dave for that)

I really like the cummins motor, and really hate the dodge chassis. I like everything about the Ford, other then it costs so much more to make so much less power out of the 6L.

Keep the deck on the truck...  :P

The hole point of buying a wreck is so you don't buy a piece of shit and make your money go allot farther.
I'm no hack. Thing will be good as or better then new when I'm done.

Instead of finding a wrecked dodge, find a ford with a blown up 6L it shouldn't be hard. Then buy a cummins and swap it in.

I like this idea best.
I make tons of egr delete kits for the 6.0l fords, so if you buy one, I'll give you an rhmt discount.

My choice would be a cummins or a newer duramax.

The powerstroke motor is absolute international garbage. they seriously suck ass. its not a matter of if they blow but when.

Cummins has transmission problems. In the infinite cost-cutting wisdom of the Chrysler cooperation, they chose to mate the cummins with a gasoline transmission barely sufficient enough for the torque rating of a hemi. The tranny is the weakest link and probably if stressed often enough, will give you problems.

Personally, I'd rather buy a cummins and spend $2k to beef up the tranny than spend $6k to replace the Ford's lousy excuse for a diesel motor.

Or, buy a duramax with an allison. Its a good stout transmission. The motor is decent, much better than the ford, but its not a cummins.

the newer dodges (6.7 cummins) come with that aisan 6 speed auto, and so far it has proven to be very stout. alot of our oil field trucks run them, and we have yet to have any issues with them at all, and we are constantly hauling up to 26k lbs (and over most of the time, but DOT has been cracking down on us)

the clutches in the 6 speed manuals are another story...

plus dodge has the electronic exhaust brake (jake brake, kinda) and that alone makes it worth buying...

That's one of those $1,500 factory options, that if thought about logically you would pay $500 (just throwing numbers out for easy math) for an aftermarket one that is designed better.

touche salesman, never really looked at it like that, i just know they work good and are nice to have on my company truck, which is provided to me, i paid nothing for it, dont pay for the fuel, and actually get paid to drive it..

it def looks different now from that side of the fence..

meh, they have there problems but if you address them BEFORE you have problems and not be an idiot like most people and overheat them 100 times before you "fix" them, they work very well. Mine has been 100% bullet proff and it runs on the "kill" program (full race only) daily unless I'm towing. The biggest problem with the 6.0l is the people running them.
