Another stupid noob question about blow off valves.
« on: April 12, 2010, 02:22:06 AM »

Getting pretty close to finally getting a setup done for once.

I currently have a 1G DSM BOV, and I am a little worried that I might end up exceeding the flow of that tiny bastard.  I wouldn't worry too much if I were using a turbo that is cheap as fuck to replace, but baller bearing turbos aren't cheap to replace.   I don't want compressor surge fucking up my perfectly good used GT28R.

Would it be in my best interest to upgrade to a larger port BOV?

Flame me for the question, but you can fuck off about running a baller bearing turbo.  It was an awesome deal.

Crush that bad boy. I have a used wrx bov. These things can hold 25 psi solid.

Not really worried about the pressure it can hold.  More worried about the flow of a port that is ~1" in diameter.

I am pretty sure an uncrushed 1G BOVs can hold up to what a Motorola 2.5 bar can handle.  If not, I would rather do the Dodge Garage mod before crushing it.

EDIT:  Apparently they usually only hold up to about 16 psi before they start to leak in stock form.  facepalm.jpg

Just try it, if you hear surge then worry about it.

That turbo isn't big enough to have problems with BOV flow of a 1g. I didn't have any issues with an Hx40 with one.

if you hear surge just don't ever let off the gas, it'll be fine

Simple solution.  Run 2 DG modded 1g valves.  Done.

Synapse is the best that ANYONE around my neck of the woods has seen or no actually hear on the release QUITE and only whoosh but at a whisper tone....Blundell is highly impressed with it, yet their WG's suck balls.... I have alot of flow and little engine retrieve after revving it... After the turbo warms up you can feel pressure blowing out of it when no throttle is applied... I love mine... Top notch fo sho. Hella better than the HSK or the Tial units and response is instant.

Lol.  The thought did cross my mind as I don't particularly want to spend 200 dollars on a BOV.

Dunno.  I have heard mixed reviews on the Synapse BOVs.

I think you have the BOV motion and their WG backwards.... I have installed 15 BOV from Synapse and never have had any issues even with C not connected. But I usually connect them anyways for reaction.... maybe takes a .5 second more to close but its hella better opening up under vacumme. WHOOOSH like a grass hoppa

Why would I run a Synapse when I can run no BOV at all?  Thats what the road race guys do.

Seriously, the synapse is better why?  They claim its "faster response, and gets you less boost drop yo" and why is that?

You'd be better off running no BOV at all.  Think about it, and then go delete your account.

I was gonna say just run two. You run two right next to each other on your twincharged setup?

Yeap I'm looking at putting them before the intercooler with my new 3" that I'm fabbing this week.
I orinally had both by the tb.

If you look at some of the pictures of my old setup I had one on top of the pipe.
And one below.  ;D

this^

i would be even less worried about the lack of BOV on a ball bearing turbo. think about it this way, at 110k rpm, a normal 16g sized rotating assembly is storing about 3.6 kilojoules of energy. that's equivalent to a 9lb fidanza flywheel spinning at ~3700rpm. the pressure wave oscillation at the compressor outlet under throttle lift surge is 3-4psi, peak to peak, spiking about 3psi above nominal boost pressure.

anyone really think a turbo impeller storing that much rotational energy is going to give two shits about a weak ass pressure wave?

blowoff valves are for pussies.
