how many miles?

my only complaint on the '00 jeep wj we have had since new is the 4.0 is on it's thrid water pump at 106k miles.  and the selectrac transfer case whines but the two 12s fix that problem every time i'm driving anywhere

The manual trannies in the 6 cyl jeeps are decent. The 231 is a good t case. The 4.0 will run forever, but it's like a chevy, it WILL develop a rear main leak, deal with it. Watch your oil pressure. They have a tendency to run low, and the oil pump tends to develop slop in it. It you ever replace the rear main seal, go ahead and get a high volume oil pump, you'll thank yourself later. A buddy of mine's would drop to about 10psi at warm idle. It used to be 20-25. Upgraded to a HV, and problem is gone.
 The axles will handle 35's if your not harsh on them, 33's if you beat it. Be a man and throw the sway bars in a corner in the garage.
  A 258 rotating assembly will drop in the 4.0 block, no machining. Stock bore, that's a fuzz over 4.5 litres, .030 over is a 4.6. REALLY improves low end. They all kinda suck at higher rpm's.
  Watch the top off road, they're not cheap. If you take it off road (woods) get a power steering box guard plate from Rusty's. Cheap insurance.
  Over all, if you take decent care of it, it will run great for a LONG time. The straight 6's are tough as nails and take tons of abuse.
  But like everyone is saying, Chrysler makes a JUNK ass auto, and as much crap as I have heard about the manuals, I have personally seen NUMEROUS 5 speed's (even the 6 speed mercedes tranny in the newer rubicon) be beaten to death and survived it. I'm talking 3rd gear low range in a jeep locked on both ends burning tires on a rock face, 4th gear on the rev limiter through mud holes, etc...These jeeps are locked, and running 33's 35's and one running 38's on a stock rubi drivetrain.

And just as bad about modding as a fast car. J ust  E mpty  E very  P ocket.   You'll start out telling yourself you'll be happy with a couple inches lift and some 33's. Next thing you know, a year later, You have a trail rig that KIND OF drives down the road. My friend with the black rubicon in the pics I posted about 6 months back has done this. Went from being a parking lot king with barely enough lift to clear massive 38's, to sitting on full floating 1 tons and comp cuts (necessary). It used to ride damn great for a Jeep, let alone a Jeep on 38's. Now he drives around, maxing out at 45 before death wobble sets in, and corners are downright scary. But you'll do it ALL for the love of the trail.

I keep having wet dreams about a fully loaded Grand cherokee with the inline 6 on 35's.  Something about heated leather seats, infinity sound, a snorkel and driving up a river bed makes me happy in my pants.  the jeep below needs a few more inches of lift but its cool.  i was thinking more along the lines of 6 and not the 3-4 pictured but hey its a start.

The above Jeep needs NO more lift, just some well places cuts. Center of gravity is KEY when seriously off roading on off camber situations. Cut the shit out of those fenders, some 35's and lock those axles, and that Jeep will go places you are too scared to drive it.

I went camping in teh mountains once and we had to pull over like every 10 minutes cause my boy in the 4 runner had to let his rad cool down.  shit was hard boiling in the rad.  so once we get there he decided to go looking for wood down one of the trails.  well his hubs got all jacked up or something and they didnt lock up.  so he was tryin to get back up this hill in 2 wheel (or one wheel rather) drive and just couldnt make it.  so we were stuck there for a few hours and then a little jeep wrangler showed up.  never touched 4 wheel drive and still pulled him back up the hill.

Cliffs: 4Runner was garbage and was saved by a little wrangler.

You saying that a factory locked 4runner is a great off road vehicle makes people that actually wheel difficult trails laugh. Go drive through your ditch, and climb up parking lot barriers at the mall. Get a name brand snorkel too, chicks love that because they KNOW that means it will go through water up to the top of it.

You can't beat a fucking wrangler. An open wrangler will out do your locked in the rear 4runner on ANY obstacle, any day. Even the 4cyl wranglers. Lock a Wrangler, and the only thing that will stop it is crazy mired up mud, which a wrangler doesn't belong in. It's too light. Wait til I get home and give you some videos. The TJ I posted in the fab section a few months ago, is just functionally modified. Lock-rite's in both ends, cut the stock flares, 4 inch suspension lift, a home made FUNCTIONAL (and WELL used) snorkel from $50 of pvc,  and some no name all terrains. Undo the sway bars, and it goes every damn where you ask it to. I'm not talking some mild trails, I mean fucking gnarly trails. Even mud, so long as you keep the tires spinning fast enough to clean them out.

I dunno man ive never broken one and i went through 2 of em.  you have to drive them differently than a giant F-150 on 72" tires.

I put stock wrangler through shit that full size broncos on 32"s were shaking their heads at.  but then again i usual abuse the hell out of my cars.  I hauled 2,000 pounds of bricks in my Honda Pilot the other day and im sure it wasn't meant for that.  I called the guy next to me a pansy cause he rented a truck to carry the same load of bricks.  he didn't want to scratch the bed of his 2009 silverado with a rhino liner.  what a pussy.

If you have gone "wheeling" and haven't broken a stock D30, you must "wheel" on fire roads, gravel parking lots, and flat muddy fields.

Shit I've broke a couple of 35's, and a 44, but actually never a 30. You know its a weak link, so you don't beat on it. You don't have to beat on a wrangler to get places other rigs have to beat on. Not like it's hard to replace a fucking axle anyway. But to each his own man.

I guess it's just the type of wheeling I do, if I am going out to bother going out then I am going to beat on it, otherwise it might as well stay home. Off the top of my head I have broken:

D30, D35, D44, D60 front and rear, D70 Rear, 11.5 AAM, Stock toy, Cromo Toy front and rear, Toy hub studs, Toy R&P's never tried a 30spline birfield yet. I have never spent the $$$$ required to build a motor and drive-train capable of breaking full floater 14B's, stock 2.5T rocks, and cromo 60's, even on 40"+ tires.

Mild mod to mild mod, I like a SAS'd (or early solid axle) 4runner over a wrangler, for the added wheelbase and better stock axles. You really do have to go to at least a D44 to be equal in axles, and you have to push the wheel base out 6" or so to make it work. Now as soon as we get into rear links and coil overs or air shocks I like a jeep platform, as the 4runner gas tank couldn't be in a worse position, but now we are talking substantial mods.

In my mind anything less then 37's and you might as well get them on 20's as they are just a street tire, and will leave you stranded on the kiddie trails. I have seen some bad ass mud racers on 33's and 35's but those are 1000hp purpose built rides, not trail rigs.

I have all but given up trying to build 4x4's anymore, they just cost WAY too much for the enjoyment I get out of them when I compare them to dirt bikes.
