DA fuel pump swap
« on: May 01, 2010, 01:55:32 PM »

ok so i have been working on a car of a friend of mine. first i had to take out an alarm that he had and alot of extra wiring from some tweaker he had working on it before. it carnks now but the main relay wasnt clicking. resoldered it and now that works but pump still wont prime so im gonna drop the tank and swap out the pump. question is i have a fuel pump from a newer civic, would that work in the DA? im sure the plug is different but im sure its just + and -. if i swapped the plugs it should work right?

the pickup for the da pump is different than a newer civic I know that. if u can make the pickup work on a newer pump then I believe it is possible. just did one last weekend but we used a walboror for the can that shit is a pain. newer civic ftw much easier

the pump i have still has the pick up on it, it was still on the bracket it came out on. ill take the tank off and see if it looks possible to do. how much of a bitch is it to drop the tank?

if this doesnt work, how much for one of the pumps you got?

25 shipped

I wouldnt call it a total pain in the ass but after you swapped out a 92+civic fuel pump you will hate doing the older style cars.

I hope the tank isnt full. You know there is a drain on the tank right? Grab some gas tanks/funnels.

Also having an extra pair of hands is nice. Its really not that bad but dont expect to be done in 2 hours. Set aside majority of the day for it for a first timer.

I'll make a hole in my floor before I remove a fucking gas tank again. I hate that. Mostly because they were leaking, but using torch to remove the 2 brackets off a leaking tank is dangerous  :?:

Everything is rusted out and break as soon as you touch it.

From where you are from yes. Hell I think I even had a parts car from california that was all rusted up under there.

most of the cars i have swapped pumps on, all had the same pump with different pickups. from the looks of it, it seems that they would all interchange as long as you had the right pickups

I used a couple ratchet straps to hold the tank when I did mine.  It gives you that extra set of hands that helps not drop it on your head when you lower/raise it.  Its not too bad but sometimes the bolt on the end of the strap twist and break so be careful or have replacements lined up.

so i got the tank off today and noticed that it wasnt the stock pump in there, somehow he has a walbro in it and looks liek somebody had tried to wire it directly to the underdash fuse panel lol. the pump i have will work but my only question is whats the best way to connect the wires to the new plug for the fuel pump inside the tank? i dont think electrical tape will hold up inside gas and was wondering if butt conectors will be safe. i just dont want it to blow up lol.

could blow up towards empty, but very unlikely.

solder/heatshrink or just get a plug that fits
