Ultra sweet head porting

Im finnally putting the crx back together and decided to port match my d16a6 head.
HOWS it look?

the exhaust is smooth to the touch and I left the intake rough.
Should I polish the exhaust and rough up the intake  some more?

The flowbench see's basically no gains with what he did. I have been around this crap since I was 15 in the all motor world of California and port on a daily basis. had access to a flowbench for the last 6 years of my life.


Just for fun look at what Honda did to the type r heads vs a b16a head. You will see more from that than a gasket match especially on a d16 head.

The divider/bowls are untouched which is where you will see the most improvement. You also can still see casting marks which means you didnt take out really any material.



Just giving the facts. Scuff/buff just means you didnt do enough to get any real power. Also unless you have access to a flowbench your shooting in the dark. I thought I knew what i was doing back in the day until I got around the flowbench and well I didnt.

Also v8 guys will tell you not to cut down the guides but majority of Honda porting wizards do. I do and have not had any issues. Now if the head has 200,000 miles and is already having issues cutting the guide down to blend the port in well yeah that could be an issue.

The truth of the matter since I don't know what im doing I didn't touch the bowl or the divider. As long as I didn't hurt the performance Im not upset. I always thought port matching improved flow a little by removing the bumps in the road so to speak.

I matched that gasket to the ported intake mani I bought off you the scried the head and removed alittle more then the scri so I dont get reversion. Then on the exhaust port the my turbo mani flange was slitly larger the the exhaust gasket so I sried the exhaust ports and took them out so they were still slightly smaller then the exhaust gasket. then I just messaged the port so the opening tapered in and out smoothly.

So you dont think it would free up any better flow? I kind of feel like a idiot for doing all that work now.

If that is what you did, then I can see some possibility for small gains just due to anti reversion.

Dunno for sure though as I have never delved into actually doing any of that kind of work and testing the results.

Maybe a couple horsepower you didnt hurt anything doing what you did but if you would of done divider/bowl work you will for sure of seen something.



Honda got it right with the type r head. I know people think type r hype not really. The head got bowl work on the intake side and a different angle on the seat.

That work alone on a flowbench should see gains of 20 cfm on the intake without touching the port.

Ok, this irritates me in the fact you sell "port matched" intakes yet you say he won't gain anything with this. So you selling snake oil?

Inake manifold runners are undersized from the head ports this is pretty common knowledge. Even aftermarket units are this way. Even worse are the cheaper chinesse manifolds which require alot of gasket matching to just match the head much worse than oem units. Hence why porting them makes power



Now like I said you want to see gains of atleast 20 cfm to see any really hp gains with a head. He will most likely not get that from that work. If he would of done bowl work/divider work even for a first timer he would of most likely got in that range and seen some real power gains.


Now will it make some power sure how much I dont know I have never done a head with so little work before.


People want to see 20+ whp on a ported head this is not going to do that.


My throttle body/manifold testing was done at guess what the track. It was proven over and over again a port matched manifold with atleast a 3mm larger throttle body+ the extra fuel required if needed would run .3-.4 tenths faster at the track.


We tested this on everything from sohc non vtec motors all the way up to h22a's.


Now if you doubt me thats fine stick to thinking that I sell snake oil. Ill keep getting people thanking me for the extra power :mexi:.

get deeper in there man! pop the valves out and dig into the bowl a tad

i did but have no pics yet



this is what my exhaust side looks like, still working on the intake port match hope chris can give some advice on how to match to the gasket the best go all the way down the port or just smooth it in close to the gasket not going in  deep

some work from chris cant wait to throw it on!

On the newer ford 4.6 dohc engines I routinely see 40 cfm + or - a few from bowl work. I almost always work the port out and match it to the intake but like Chris said most of the gain is in the bowls themselves.

well here is my shit nothing crazy i just smoothed it all out. didnt really want to mess with it a lot just because i dont have a bench to really dig into the head with any confidence

roughed out the bowls and the ports



not perfectly matched but the IM is smaller so anti-reversion is still there







hit it with 60 grit per chris M spec  :noel: as you can see cant quite reach everthing but whatever i just want this motor together and boosting ill go crazy on the other head






thats all for today any tips on installing valve keepers? lol

trick the keepers in the retainer with lube then push the down like all hell?? im not sure if i want to use a boxed end wrench on Ti retainers any other ideas?

Head was cleaned, ported, milled, and seated by our pet machinist.  It has the usual pimpshit valvejob where the seat is thinned and moved outward modestly, for best performance exhaust seats are supposed to be enradiused but his enradiusing tool won't do a smaller than ~31mm seat.  Oh, well.  Frankly I don't give a shit, part of the mojo about the D16Y5 Type-R was his valvejob so it's close enough... he doesn't have Honda mojo like RLZ, but he does significantly less of them.  Gains are gains.










This one's interesting.

Mine looks a lot like speedjunkie's on the intake side, but it's not-ish.  I went through a big thing where I measured a bunch of D16 intake ports for Weir (or to hassle him, anyway, he put up with me good fucking dude) and the Z6 was the "widest" at 42mm.  Mine now sit at 45mm width. 

Z6 are an all-around larger intake port than any other D-series.  If you can square-off the intake entry and transition everything into the bowl plus thin the divider in a similar fashion to the way a Z6 is from the factory, you will have made gains.  You have to take the valves out to get in there properly, and you shouldn't have them seated until after you're done - be REALLY careful not to hit a seat while you're in there, if you gouge it deeply = replace.  Not an issue for some people, but my hands shake badly so I stopped trying.  I'm also impatient, so that was a great excuse for me to quit.
