EcuFlash experiences?
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:02:58 PM »

So, I've been tuning the evo. Well at least trying. Been using EcuFlash for it. Anybody have any experience with ecuflash or any other evo tuning program?

Here's the ecuflash link:

I've tuned 14 Subarus in the last year with it, two Evos, I like it.

ECUFlash for the Evos is less comprehensive than the Subaru ECU... the Evo ECU is simply less sophisticated.  Not a bad thing, although the Subaru unit is very nice despite - or actually because of - it's complexity.

Bottom line, knock is so integral to the control strategy of the Mitsubishi ECU that as soon as you instoduce anything that makes noise it becomes worthless.  Dtock engine with big shit bolted to it and the wick turned up?  Sweet perfection.  Cams that make valvetrain noise, forgings or even clearanced stock pistons, exhaust noise, solid motor mounts, all recipes for mediochre power.

I've got an Evo8 ECU on my bench and have the knock line traced out (as much as I can without popping free SMT caps on another man's ECU and Z metering them).  It comprehensively bandpass filters the KS signal at which point I ASSume it processes the resulting signal based on signal volume.  This ASSumption means that you can theoretically disable (ignore) the KS protocol and just tune high octane maps, making it much like an OEM-quality standalone.

If you check the Wanted forum I was asking after Eclipse and Lancer NT ECUs because I suspected they can be flashed with Evo8 code, and about a month after that the rest of the world figured the same thing out.  Bottom line, I'm getting old and dumb because I used to call shit like that years out.

Hmm. So then I wonder if the evo 6 ecu I have is using different filters because supposedly it has alot of false knock.

I did notice that any sort of "knock" or noise really really affected it. I'm working on getting the factory anti-lag to work on mine now. Having a couple issues getting it working properly. Need to get my EGT hooked into my zeitronix and set up.

On a side note I have 1g chippable turbo ecu if you wanted to play with that at all.

No experience at all, but if like the DSM stuff you have a degraded KS, bad KS wiring, or motor mount/exhaust noise.

I wanted the Eclipse/Lancer ECU swap for DSM purposes.  $100-125 ECU + $60 new OEM KS = awesome running 300-325 whp streetcars.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's stopping you from plugging a resistor into the knock plug so it sees what it wants to see?

I was looking at the same thing for an evo.

I see.

After I muster up enough urine to piss in a cup I'm swinging by barnes and noble to see what I can find on electronics, maybe even find that book kgx mentioned.

I can take a quarter, set it on top of the intake manifold, and I'll bet you $100 you cant tune the knock out of it. That's how sensitive they are.

1g ecu is VERY aggressive from the factory.  The 2g not so much.  I dont know of anyone apart from Ceddy who would want to mess with evo 6 code.  If you rewire for that 1g ecu, your only option is Jackal, which isnt much of an upgrage from what you have, but is a steady consistant SD setup. Either way is better than fucking dsmlink failure, so if you pay $$$ for that over-rated afc, I will personally drive down to florida and bitchslap you sir.

I've actually been doing some messing around with the evo 6 code. Check out:
http://geekmapped.com/
Lots of good info there.

Haven't read up on the Jackal stuff, but it does look pretty cool. If I had still a DSM I would have liked to help with it. Getting Address' for everything in the ecu code takes forever. I love it when people make there own ECU control software.

As far as the eprom dsm ecu, I was offering it up. It's from a '90 though. However I also have a complete uncut '90 wiring harness to go along with it. I'll give it up for a ridiculous deal ..... like the cost of shipping.

Hardware trace through an Ostrich v2.0, done.  Very easy.

Sure, I'll do it.
