teenagers with JDM cars and the lack of knowledge
« on: May 28, 2010, 11:09:16 PM »

So, im at work minding my own fucking business when my little brother brings another JDM car to my door.  Its a realtivly stock r33 with an ebc and bov. Nothing fancy, was in good shape.

Says for some reason it wont rev past 4000rpms, im like wtf ok. So do u have a boost guage, he says Yes. OK, so how much boost you run, I duno it doesnt work he replies.

At this point im like FFS, another kid who doesnt know anything who had 5k to buy a JDM " super car"

I ask him to pop the hood, and im mindfucked.  I knew he was hitting boost cut and figured out why pretty quick.  The bov was connected to the in nipple of the Boost controller, the boost gauge was hooked up to the out nipple of the boost controller and the WG had no vac source at all.

I laughed, called them both R tards and fixed it for them. I set it for wg pressure at 4psi so the kid wouldnt get killed.  What i found entertaining is he swore it came like that from the importer. I knew these importer fucktards had no clue for the most part what they wree doing, but this was fucked.

You would think the internets would of fixed this for him if he had half a brain, some common sense and learned to read a bit.

He must, because I'd probably be posting a CRX for sale if I could get that kind of deal.

Ignorance is a luxury.  You should make people pay for it...

Tagged is running a dealer plate on it for eternity.  Titling of an R33 is technically possible since it's had all front and side impact testing performed, but you'll have to install a USDM engine in the vehicle to do so since the EPA/DOT have blacklisted the RB26.

If it wasn't wronghanddrive, I'd get one for Wisconsin. Buy a pre-'96 rustbucket 240, swap vin's, and enjoy. No emissions for pre-'96, and no highway patrol knows wtf an rb26 is. Around here they just look for tint, broken lights, mufflers, and black people. It would kinda be a cluster if you have to do an insurance claim though...

I agree with Foowee. I'd have fixed it, given them a test drive (at 20psi), reverted it back, then asked how much that speed was worth to him.

Three out of four 240s at the shop have S15 conversions on them, so it's not like cops remotely expect them to look like anything that's supposed to be on this side of the shore.  If pulled, "no, it's a 240SX, it's just a bodykit."

Yeah, that works on the side of the road but I think you'd run into troubles with insurance if ever the car was burnt/crashed and they dug a little harder.

Maybe you'd be fine, I don't know. What I do know is we get all the JDM cars in off boats and you can pick em up for about 5k and title them no problem in Ontario.

Only if you want to do an insurance claim on them.  It's a $5K car, sir.  Most performance modifications are throwing away money, if you look at the inherent value of the RB26 driveline you can run a goddamn R32 into a wall and still turn out alright after you part it out.

I'm guessing it's a GTS-T, not a GTR, so it'd have an RB25 if that makes a difference.  Not sure what's on the ban list in the States motor-wise.  R33 GTRs are going for roughly 15k.  5K for a GTS-T is reasonable up here, especially if you get one from Queerbec.

Sure, it may be 8k off the lot, but whatever you have to do to fix it's many many problems will land you in the 14-16k range thanks to the "skyline tax" on parts...  And you know you loved that drift, faggot.

Yep and as far as getting an R33 into the states good luck. The current EPA/DOT/ICE peoples have put a real stop to that even bringing the chassis' in as a car "part" Also even if you wanted to register it you couldn't because the r33 skylines contain NO obd systems. Making none of them leagal as a "skyline" now if you wanted to bring it over put a USDM 2JZ with wiring harness in it and hookup the OBD sysytem to it you "may" be able to get that to pass as a kit car. However what has worked in the past is not working currently. If you want a skyline in the states wait 4 years and get and '89 r32 that'll be legal because it'll be 25 years old. Otherwise good luck. If you don't already have it probably don't want to try.

Tagged is running a dealer plate on it for eternity.

This is how its done.  Certain people I may know might have 100k worth of cars that have no proper titles...Nor do they ever need to be inspected.

It's trivial to make some Ford, GM, and Scoob ECUs spit out whatever VIN you want it to as well as whatever emissions status.  I've not played around with the Scoob ECUs enough to be confident of rewriting the VIN, but one is getting wired to the OBD2 port of a friend's AEM controlled 2.85 liter WRX with 76mm turbo so that it passes scantool emissions.  Disable all codes, check the force readiness codes box, kthxbye.

Whatever ECU flashed with a 240 VIN, I repeat, "Yes officer it's a 240SX with a bodykit."

JD the officer that pulls me over is the least of my worries. The feds are the worry. I would in know way be worried about the local cops. The federal coppers though. Those guys are a whole nother story. Also the R33 Skyline never came with an OBD system installed which is why they aren't legal. I'm sure you could wire one up if it had all the proper sensors. Except that the feds know it never came with one. Not sure about the '96 and up RB motors though. However a 95 R33 chassis could possibly through alot of pain be brought in.

The real issue is that now the EPA/ICE/NHTSA/DOJ/DOT have really started cracking down on everything car related imported and everything that HAS ALREADY been imported into this country. I'm sure Chris M has some insight here as well. They're are talks of unlegalizing some cars that are already legal. Always remember State legal does not equal Federally legal. So even if you have a title that doesn't mean shit. People are getting screwed out of cars for BS reasons, because of what is probably one of the Grayest laws in the book.

People that brought Chassis' into this country then reassmbled them here are wrong that is blatantly illegal. It's actually spelled out in the law that you cannot do that. Even if you don't drive them on the street and you only track them, It's still illegal. Running with a dealer tag is risky business though. The feds don't fuck around they will crush or force you deport your car. East Coast is pretty sweet though because the feds haven't headed out this way on any of there silly raids. PM me for details.

From a Canadian perspective, the car would have to return to Canada for at least 1 day every 6 months to remain registered in Canada.  Insurance can be as picky as saying it has to be in Canada for 6 months plus a day out of the year to stay insured.  On top of that, the car will more than likely have to come back to it's homeland for 1 day every 30 days, depending on their policy.

Incorrect.

We looked this up before sending the vette to live in AZ , as shipping it back to canada every 1/2 year would be costly. They have 0 issues with it being there (MTO)  , as does the insurance company as long as they are aware of it's whereabouts.  The same thing is being done with the next car we send down there. sure we could get a car in the US , but the insurance would be astronomical
