Well, i picked up my toyotalsvtak motore.

Its a 7afe, im going to stuff some H beams and a 16v head on

This will be my second tijuana rebuild, im worried about the hone and the ridge on the west east side of the cyilnder bores. I can't remember if that is supposed to be there or not.  I'm assuming its wear from the cyilnders rocking back n forth but im not 100% sure.

It was obviously honed, and it seems like there isnt enough angle in the hatch marks. IIRC they are supposed to be roughly 60degrees, but i not a pro builder or machinist so im not sure.  There is some discoloration on the bores, looks like rust scale perhaps im not sure. My last motor had it, so i honed the fuck out of it and it made perfect compression regardless. Hone looks a bit rough, but again, im unsure if this is right. I usually just rering, hone and go.

It may be the flash glare, but the cross hatch isn't very defined. I would put a piston in the bore and see where the top ring sits in relation to that worn spot. So long as it isn't too bad, and the cross hatch is actually there, I would rock it. The worst thing I could see happening would be blowing by that smooth part of the cylinder, and having the piston rocking even more from uneven combustion pressures on the face of the piston.
   Disclaimer: this is just an opinion, I've only built <20 engines, not very experienced. Just fairly well read.

Are you doing all of that with the pistons still in the bores?

Or did you just go crazy with the ATF?

Just to be clear, I got the motor this way and havent unassembled it as of yet. This is what the previous owner had done. He honed it obviously with the pistons out.


Do you mean put the pistons in and see if the rings lie below that weird ridge? I'll do that, but no point until i get H beams and my 4agze pistons  I'm not sure if the gze piston rings will seat at the same height in the bore.

That is what i was worried about. There goes my cheap 80$ piston solution. In your opinion you wouldn't use this block as is. Its gonna be a 300whp+ build this time but I hoped to still do it on the cheap.

Naw, I had to guys willing to sell me 4agze aw11 pistons for 80bux. Used shit, some new rings and im good to go.  I can buy new from toyota, but it comes out to something like 380 400bux from lithia toyota. Might as well spend the hundred more and go forged, but now im 400 bux over my initial budget.

  You'll laugh, but this head block combo bumps up compression roughly a point so I'm careful with what piston compression i pick.  i wont know for sure till I actually do the math for myself and pipette it.

No, I meant that fucking giant smooth as a baby's ass spot in the bore. Don't try to run it, for real. You will regret it everyday until you finally do it right. If you don't completely fuck the cylinders with crazy piston movement.

The only question I have is what was likely used: the dingleberry hone ran at 10000rpm w/o in-out movement, or a flap wheel with the same treatment. In any case, it looks like 50grit was used.

Take it to a machine shop, have them measure for straightness & roundness. Unless it was ground out a shitload, a professional hone job won't require more than a few 10-thous to get-er-done. If it does, just run a shitload of boost. Them gaps will seal up right quick-like.

It will probably take more than a correct honing, seeing that giant smooth spot. I would be scared of that motor. If ignorance prevailed in the hone, why would you think the rest of the preperation was done remotely correct? Mic everything, clean the shit out of everything. Treat it as a junkyard block, b/c that's basically what you have, junk. Did the guy leave the pistons in while he "honed" it? What the fuck made this guy think he could perform this type of work? I'm not confident in my ability to hand hone and get a decent cross, so i pay someone with experience and equipment to do it right. And I'm a cheap ass.

Luckily I paid nearly nothing for the block. I have a sneaking suspension the guy had no fuckin clue wtf he was doing. Its basically coming right apart and ill check every bore and every journal with a run out. I'm hoping to god the crank isn't a horror show.

PS: JD , the block is dirty as fuck and Ill be tanking it before anything goes into it.  What was his expert opinion on the condition of the bores? Bore start over?

I took it out into the sun today and took a real good look at the bores.  The hone is definelty terrible, but I have some good news.  That discoloration is exactly that. Its not any lower than the rest of the walls, it is not an indent and looks like it is below the ring line. The stock lip is still there from factory above the rings. The discolouration is like dirt or rust or something that the hone never took out. Its just below the factory ridge ( which isnt probably factory and just where the rings have worn up to) so the hone couldnt reach it without honingout the ridge.

I may just take it to get honed and checked for roundess and rock it.

You are 100% correct with this train of thought. There is no way a ridge came from any factory. Think about it, the machine that does the boring has to get into the cylinder, and back out. Same with the hone.

You need to tear apart and look at more motors, guys.  Failure analysis is fundamental to learning how to do things properly.  There are a couple dozen guys on this site who can call it right off.
