One of my friends just picked up an integra GSR.  Skip to next paragraph for TL;DR.  A couple little issues (previous owner did a wire tuck when they removed AC, power steering, and cruise control, and now there are issues with the headlight wiring that I am going to end up having to trace), but otherwise its a good car.

The problem it is having is that when you lay into it, bluish white smoke comes out when it hits vtec.  I really don't know much about B-series, as I haven't really worked on them very much, aside from an Integra LS one of my friends had.  What would cause this?  Valve seals leaking when more oil pressure gets dumped into the head when vtec crosses over?

 White smoke = coolant

Do the standard leak/compression test.

Its got a definite oil tinge like 2-stroke exhaust, and after that the car smells like oil.  Although it could possibly be burning coolant too.  This kid has retarded luck with buying cars

I'll have him get it compression/leakdown tested, but what would cause it to only happen in vtec?

PCV system problem ???

I'll check that out first, since that would be easier to fix than the valve seals.  With all the shit that's been removed from this car, and all the vac line rerouting, it wouldn't surprise me that much.  At least there's a lot of room to work.

Thats madd vtak popping off son.........

Valve seals......

Valve seals would make sense...

Thanks guys, I'd throw up some pr0n as thanks, but I'm currently at work.  If I remember I will when I get home tonight.  Any preferences as to what you guys want to see?

Isn't smoke when starting or rough start a symptom of worn valve guides/seals?

Good luck figuring it out...

I lose about 1/2qt every week or two on a fresh build.  Don't see any leaks nor do I see smoke  ???

How many miles on the car/motor?

I think right around 100k.  Car is a 1997.

Friend thinks the oil is making it not haul ass like he thinks it should.  I told him its because it doesn't have a turbo.

Compression test the motor. Like alot of gsr/b16a's they are owned by youth who didnt maintain the cars. Also smoke is redneck talk for I dont know what Im really talking about unless its a freight train of smoke a little smoke didnt hurt anything.

Compression/leakdown and then come back. Until then talking about smoke belongs on honda-tech.

I told him to pick up a compression tester tomorrow, if he gets off his lazy stoner ass I might have compression numbers tomorrow

Did a compression test today.  numbers were 187, 186, 183, 185

Pretty even.  We think its valve stem seals.  He wants to get a set of cams, so he's probably going to rebuild the head and upgrade the valvetrain.

Those numbers are horrible for a gsr.

The compression should be at around 210psi.

lol.  We might have fucked them up a bit, we were kinda stoned.  That's what it got up to when we cranked it over 4 times.  Come to think of it, my F22 has almost the same numbers.  I have to sort out some wiring on that car (figure out where everything was put in the wiretuck the last guy did), so I'll check again when I'm sober.  I wasn't thinking they seemed bad, since they were pretty evenly bad, but yeah, it would make sense that a 10:1 performance motor would have higher pressure than my low comp single cam.

Riding in the car, it still feels decently ballsy, although it feels like it should be a little faster.

Here's some jenna haze for your trouble.

A leakdown test is much better.

If you did a cold compression test, then the numbers are pretty much worthless.

Try doing a wet compression test to see if the results improve.  If they do improve a significant amount,m then the rings aren't sealing as they should be anymore.

We had gone out and bombed around in it for a little bit, so it was up to temp.

Yeah, leakdown test is next.  We weren't able to get our hands on a working compressor that day to do one.  Also, will try a wet compression test.

It wouldn't really surprise me if the thing had fried rings, because the car used to be autocrossed, and was tracked from time to time.  And I'm pretty sure when it wasn't being autocrossed, it spent a good chunk of its life having the shit beaten out of it.

Sounds like rings.  Valve stem seals don't smoke under WOT.

Would it be normal for all of them to be worn to shit at once?  I'm used to only seeing one or two cylinders having shit compression.

That' just as likely in anything that's been run hard, and worn out evenly.

FYI, Jorsher's call on the PCV/vent deal can make a medium oil burner into a smoker.

It usually doesn't make that big of a difference.  Notice I said usually...

It didn't make any difference on my failboat.  It was a little better doing compression at WOT, but not significantly.  He's currently rebuilding the head, the valve guides were pretty much shot.

Think how much more the valves move up/down when in vtec. Higher speed & longer duration on a seal could push it past the tipping point.

Pull ecu, WOT, 3 cranks/pumps. That's my ideal method. To give you an idea how compression testers can range, I had a stock Z6 that got 220's across the board. When they're low but very even like that, I tend to discount the lowness. Getting 4 cylidner to take a shit that evenly is as improbable as Hotrex sucessfully building a Honda.

So I'm not sure when this kid is going to get the thing back together.  He's lately been kinda flaky.  Ran into needing a valve spring compressor that works for a DOHC honda (he thought the one he had would), then has been smoking a lot of pot instead of working on getting the integra back on the road.

He also wants to impress this girl, and tried to get this GSR-swapped Del Slow:

Girl is not very hot, got herself knocked up within months of graduation, decided to actually have the kid, and has a boyfriend.

In no way is that car not homosexual, and in no way is that car worth being seen in to get some pussy that's been ruined by having a kid.

Its the rings. I had this same problem. Rpm's hit the vtec smoke would be some bad you couldn't see the car behind you.
Why does it matter when you WOT on compression test and remove the ecu removed? Why don't you just pull the fuse to the ECU?

Man you sound dumb! :dunce:

You pull the ecu when you are doing a compression test because that way you arnt dumping fuel into your motor when you are cranking it over.

And what the hell is "V" do you mean vtec? Way to sound like captin wonder douch!

And why the hell havent you done a intro post?
