EMS options for a 93 caprice 5.7
« on: July 12, 2010, 09:58:41 PM »

A guy at work wants me to to turbo his stock caprice. He just had the engine  rebuilt and wants it to go fast. The only thing im unsure of is the ems part of it. I read the corvette thread and a few people mentioned it that there are a few options.

I'm doing a 94 Caprice with a 383 and a Procharger now.  The LT1 ECU can't have it's load axis rescaled, so using it for forced induction is not advised.  I originally intended to convert to an earlier 7727 ECM and tuning it with www.code59.org, but come to find out (after buying the 7727 + plugs) that it doesn't support Optispark.  The choices are either run a small cap HEI distributor (requires changing the IM on the 94, I understand earlier LT1 have a block off plate where a dist goes) with the 7727, or convert to run Northstar coils/module/crank pickups to run the 7727, or call a Frenchman and buy a DFI Gen 7+ for $75.

Yes, I trafficked in standalones with a Frenchman.  Don't pretend you wouldn't.  Fuck you!

Uhm, I'm not exactly certain how the 93 models go down, but I have service literature at the shop and can advise you by tomorrow afternoon.  If the goddamn thing has some fucked up ignition device sammiched between the water pump and timing cover then it might take a hair of work.

The 92-96 LT1 and L99 engines used the same basic Opticrap distributor.  There was a revision in the 95+ models that added a vent to help combat condensation, thus corrosion issues, IIRC.

I did not know that you could not rescale the load axis on the later OBD1 PCMs for these things.  I was trying to talk a friend of mine into converting his 96 Impala SS to OBD1 several years back so we could have some fun with it for cheap.

Well, one thing to consider if you are new-ish at GM (like I am) and are a total n00b at LT1 (like I am).  If auto, that's about the breakover point where they started sticking the 4L60E or 4L80E into everything.  These are computer controlled transmissions which require control of line pressure solenoid, each gear's shift solenoid, and then the normal TCC (torque converter clutch).

The DFI I picked up on a steal only controls TCC.  I'm currently trying to piggyback it on top of the stock ECM and hopefully the ECM will pick up transmission control correctly.  If that bombs, there are standalone controllers in the $400 new range, wiring harness is extra.

Honestly?  20/20 hindsight, I'd have tried an FIC for this car.  You'd need to call AEM and ask them if the FIC can deal with 360 degree optical wheels (Optispark is just like Nissan distributor pickups or CAS), if they say yes then it's game on.

just fyi, do NOT use the painless EMS.  It is junk.  My best friend bought that and the harness for his p1sc LT1 and when i have technical questions regarding functions they had no idea what i was talking about.  I even spoke with the engineer of the management and they were clueless.  Apparently we are the first ones to use it on a SC LT1.  yea...a little frightening.

They are junk anyway.  Throw an LS in it and make gobs more power with less money.  Not to mention the EMS systems out there for LS builds are far more superior

How do you get away with controlling the trans? I mean, I know its only a few outputs, but does the engine ecu do the job or the BCM or what?

ECM/PCM, controls both engine and trans.  All in one unit.
