best external hard drive? 1.5-2Tb
« on: July 26, 2010, 10:50:19 AM »

Read in one of these threads about new larger hard drives having a high failure rate, maybe the mod2010 torrent thread?
Searched and the new 2Tb seagate that showed up on my desk had a real almost a 40% one star on new egg and amazon for just up and dying, or out of the box dead.

What do you guys recommend?
Western Digital?

Thanks

Here's the thing about hard-drives - The more space you shove in them, the higher the probability of a bad sector.  At about 4TB levels you're statistically "guaranteed" to have one...

Here's the thing about reviews - The only people that usually spend time writing one are people that are pissed.  Not to say that you shouldn't go by reviews, but they aren't as useful as they should be.

I prefer WD.  Not that I've had any problems with Seagate (I've never owned one of their drives), but simply because WD has never given me problems.

I have 5 x 1TB WD Caviar Black, 1 x 1.5TB WD Caviar Green, and an old 500GB Samsung (which will soon be replaced with a 2TB WD Caviar Black) in my PC.  I have an external 1.5TB WD which has a 1.5TB WD Caviar Green inside...

External drives are not more likely to fail than internal ones simply because they're external like a lot of people seem to believe (not implying that you do).  The drives use the same hardware used internally, they just have an additional power supply and different connections.  There may seem to be a higher failure rate simply because externals are usually carried around and deal with a bit more wear.

That said, I still recommend WD because I've had a 100% success rate with them.

1.5TB:

On a side note:  I ordered a monitor Friday afternoon.  Was in my city Saturday morning, and will be in my hands after work.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001378

If I like it, which I'm sure I will, I'll be picking up another for a nice dual setup since I had to sell off my previous monitors and have been using a wimpy 17".

Oh, and a majority of my drives have been running 24x7 for almost 2 years, and they are worked hard by uTorrent.  Good stuff, fa sho.

The WD Caviar Black I've had for about a year now was making all sorts of loud clacking and chirping noises a few months ago.  It's mostly quiet these days.  No problems.

The cool HD to have this week?  Man, I'm really not sure.  I know WD was not one of them at the time I bought mine, but it was the hot budget gaming SATA affair and didn't seem prone to problems.

I hate WD drives, I had 3 burn out on me within a year. Decided to just do it right and not do it again and picked up one of these bad boys. http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/product/57842/review/lacie_2big_quadra_2tb.html

3 in a year. You are a statistical outlier. Just shit luck.

I run WD Caviar Green. They are not as fast as the black but they run quieter, are cheaper and use less power. The power/noise thing is nice when you are running 5 of them in a NAS box 24/7.

The cheapest way to get external storage is to buy an OEM packaged drive and an enclosure then put em together yourself.

I think I recall you mentioning that about your Caviar Black in the past.  Really odd.  Any "odd" noises from a hard-drive is usually a bad sign.  The fact that you're still using it and most of the noise went away is really weird.  I would have had to ship that thing back...  Fortunately, Blacks have the 5 year warranty.

The cool HDD to have nowadays is solid-state, but yeah...  Really if you stick with Seagate or WD, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.  They both build good drives.  Seagate's firmware woes a year or two back is the reason I went with WD, and I'll stick with WD until I have a reason not to.

2TB Green for $100 shipped....nuts!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136514

If you have a SATA external already, you could probably buy the bare drive and swap it in.

stfu, you Ukrainian gypsy. WD doesn't make the same quality drives that they did 10 years ago. They are far removed from the top echelon of quality manufacturing these days. I need a drive that can survive in Iraq, a WD can't. 50% of people in my unit had their WD book fail. I don't like them, period.

The LaCie however takes a shit ton of abuse as I'm rarely gentle on anything and it pretends like nothing ever happened like a scared wife in an abusive relationship.

Yeah, you must really have bad luck, Fysh.

You do realize that Lacie doesn't manufacture hard-drives, and is using drives from either Samsung, Hitachi, Western Digital, or Seagate?  I think they use Seagate.  All modern hard-drives are sealed...so dust can't be an issue.  WD drives have "drop protection" where the head is moved away from the platter when a drop is sensed, and I'm sure other manufacturers have a similar tech.  So, the only thing that separates Lacie externals from others is the enclosure, and I doubt theirs are special.  Only thing I could think of that could possibly make Lacie externals "better" is if they have better cooling...which isn't something other companies can't do.

It's a chirping semi-click, IIRC.  I used to leave the machine on 24/7, then started shutting it off during the day to prolong HD life because I don't want to send it back.  The noises immediately started to go away.  It's not run pretty much solid from 9-10 pm until 9 am every day, and either I've trained my ear to ignore the minor noise or it's gone entirely.  I'll pay attention tonight.

It actually appears the We Digital is better...if you want to judge by benchmarks.

So, what brand drives are in that external?

The WD significantly edged the LaCie out in only one comparison:
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/external-hard-drive-charts/compare,695.html?prod%5B1969%5D=on&prod%5B2223%5D=on Link may not work correctly, but check the box next to S2VR and the LaCie 2big then click compare to see side by side comparisons.

Also, you're comparing a 500gb HDD (WD) to a 1TB HDD (LaCie). And I've never heard of a WD S2VR Duo, I have only heard of it as a CalDigit product. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822154442 $120 for the LaCie 1TB. I can't even find the S2VR for sale anywhere.

I think you are incorrect: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/177

I know the controller is out in the open, but being the clearance between the head and platter is quite a bit smaller than dust/hair/etc, harddrives would fail every day without being sealed.

Well you are braver than I am for keeping data on it anyway.  They give a 5 year warranty on the Blacks...I can ship an external if you need temporary storage.

Mine run 24x7 in an overcrowded case, no noise other than a very faint sound of the heads if I have the side of the case off.

I forget where I shoved the 1.5TB.  I think with some adapters in a 5.25" bay.  Anyway, crowded as fuck, I worry about the temps with them running nonstop because I know high temps decreases life, so will probably shove a bunch of Green drives in a NAS...

Oh, and you can probably tell why I've decided to go with a modular PSU next build.

Open your Lacie, I want to know.  They do not manufacture harddrives, they just make pretty overpriced external enclosures.

Take a gander at the internal harddrive benchmarks.  WD/Samsung all up ons, and those as close to true benchmarks as you'll get without the pesky enclosure controller and such in the way.

Then perhaps WD just makes a shitty enclosure. That could lend itself to the durability issues I've had with WD products.

That's a bit more understandable :P  Just thought it was funny to praise a company that uses the same drives you're bashing.

A plot of when hard-drives fail makes a nice bell curve.  Usually they'll die soon after they're built, or looong after they're built.  If you make it past the first few months, you shouldn't need to worry for a while (statistically).

JD - did SMART HDD monitoring detect problems with your drive?  There's a WD Diagnostic utility somewhere that will spit out all the info.

Exactly, not fully sealed.  CarPC guys have issues if they seal off, or get crap in, the vent for the controller.

I've seen no SMART errors.  I don't remember if it was disabled in BIOS or anything when I set the computer up.  I'll probably try to determine wtf sometime soon, internets are stale and I've been doing other shit recently.

Seagate nut swniger.......

1 TB external with no issues, but reports of the 1.5 TB unit failing are out there.

Why Seagate??? Why not???

My original tower has a 13 GB Seagate in it from the 1990's and never a issue.

In 14 years of PC's I've lost three HDD's, all Samsung. Lately the Samsung F Drive is running fine, it's only for Porn.

add 1 TB to that.
