944 turbo; 8/31 WOW fun update
« on: July 28, 2010, 11:50:51 AM »

I've decided to buy a 80s Porsche 944 turbo.  Everyone who has owned one loves them, everyone else thinks they would be a maintenance nightmare.

What do you think, and what is a good price to pay for one?

I have seen nice ones for 5-7K  , Nightmare - no , but they do need maintenance and care. can't treat it like a honda , not change the oil and just add it , not change timing belts...ect

people more the smarter then I will probably chime in. I run PCA events in a borrowed 911 , 944 Turbo's are fast and the owners love em

eh. they are problematic, they are hard to work on.
that being said, you should be able to find a pretty decent one for around 5k maybe less

They aren't as bad as a dsm. But they are getting older. Mine has 185k miles and runs fine. If you want a fast street car they rock, but if I was going to race, id get something else.

I paid $700 for mine broken, clean ones go for $4500-6000 depending on where you are. Plan on at least changing the water pump and timing belts.

Yep I've always liked em as well.  At least the aesthetics.  I have no idea on the mechanical innards.

LSX swap it

That seems to fix a lot of reliability & power issues for older rwd cars.

Drove one of those in a '90, I must say with upgraded suspension and brakes, it was some of the most fun I've had driving a car on the street.

Go for an '89 or newer.

Why do you say that? Shitty abs and a laggy turbine housing make 89 better?

'89 and later were more powerful, had better suspension, bushings, extra chassis rigidity, nicer interiors etc.

There is a 944 just down the street from me. It has a forsale sign it and they want $4700 for it.

I do not think it even has a turbo. :?:

Are they really worth it?

From what I hear the non turbo is pretty different.   Different body kinda, diff tyranny, diff suspension.  Kinda bogus

It got a whopping "35hp", most of that being a boost increase, no changes to the motor, you only got the beter suspension with the M030 option, which was also available in 86-88, I know nothing of this extra chassis ridgidity you speak of, never seen that written anywhere from porsche, the interiors are all the same apart from minor things like the ashtray and airbag steering wheel from 86-91.

my dad has an '86 944 turbo.
around here in goog mechanical condition and ok exterior(no crashes) they go for anywhere between $7000 to $11000 mostly depends on milage.

my dad bought his a while ago for $6000, put in all new gaskets, water pump, now a clutch, koni yellows
and basically a whole new a/c unit for $1500.
pros- pretty fast stock, LSD, can run on 87octane if needed.
chippable, can be tuned by TunerPro, or atlantis dme editor to gain alot more power. my dad hasn't let me chip his yet.

cons- parts are somewhat expensive. at least compared to civic shit
clutch alone was $700 for oem, although about the same for South Bend clutch unit. little parts are hard to find being older too

Pretty sure '89 and prior were basically all "S" models, thus having the M030 suspension, sport seats, 928 front brakes and stuff. The chassis stiffening may have been just the difference between the NA and turbo models, its been a while so I wouldn't doubt I've mixed a couple things up.

One thing I've noticed about the older Porsches is they are getting a lot harder to find parts.

Haha you only spotted that one cause of the chicky in the bikini, that caught my eye first too its ok

But i had a buddy that had one just like this all motor too, we ended up running a t-bird .60, custom sinktrap with an fmu at 7lbs. We beat the shit out of it and it never failed on us, 155 in those are kinda scary. :?:

The later engines will have m44.52 stamped on the exhaust side of the back of the cyl head. The big diff in the motors is the better water pump/t-belt setup, and the -8 turbine. Id rather have the -6 housing myself tho. M030=factory coil-overs btw.
