rHMT How To: Fiber reinforce your rubber couplers!
« on: April 07, 2009, 10:21:04 PM »

So I needed a reducing coupler to connect my turbo to the charge piping and I didn't have one in silicone.  I went out and grabbed one of those bad ass rubber reducers for PVC from the local hardware store.  It fit ok, but had a lot of problems staying on and after a few weeks developed some rips and tears.

Long story short: three busted couplers later I finally went ahead and ordered a reinforced silicone one, but in the mean time I still need boost.

So from left to right you have steps one to three in reinforcing your awesome PVC coupler.
1.  Buy a rubber PVC coupler and use it until it rips.  Do this three times.
2.  Duct tape.
3.  Wrap the shit out of the busted coupler and cover up all the holes.  Install on vehicle and apply boost.

1 day, so far so good, hopefully the silicone will be here in a week.  Can't be any worse than it was without the duct tape.

that roll of 3m duct tape cost more than a coupler, whether it be rubber or silicone

yea but now he has 7/8s of a roll of duct tape left to fix his suspension or gas tank

What you do is, if it's a straight coupler, you just wrap some thing sheet metal around it and then clamp that bitch. Then when the rubber gets hot and expands like a balloon, the metal supports it and it doesn't pop.  :somb:

Actually the best "duct" tape I have ever used was 200mph tape that the military uses.

Read about helicopters and jeep kept together with that shit.

update:  it lasted about three days before the duct tape ripped through and started leaking a small amount of boost.  Got the silicone reducer installed today anyhow.

Why not just use a section of sheet metal? Make it a bit wider than the coupler, wrap, then make sure you bend/crimp the ends so the clamp doesn't slide off. It would be best to use aluminum so the clamp bends it right. You may have seen the "no hub" couplers with the metal sheeth around them at homeboy depot.
