Vague info provided. Need opinions.
« on: August 16, 2010, 07:39:21 AM »

The shop I do some welding at just got in a Civic. (very rare) Anywho, its 91 converted to MPFI with a obd0-1 conversion harness. The douche who owns it says the motor is built. Its an A6 block with a Z6 head. He claims its 12:1 but really doesn't seem to know anything about the car and I think he's full of shit.

Problem, car runs but pings badly. Obviously mexican fuel is possible.

If this is 12:1 can it be run on pump safely?

I need to check it for codes, injectors look stock, wiring is a complete hack job. Its a train wreck.

If it has obd1 to obd0 adapter harness, then ground the d4 and you should get CEL flash on the dash.

As for the 12:1 and pinging add a gallon of toluene to the tank and see if it makes a difference.

If it does he really could have a high comp motor or just a large amount carbon build up on the pistons.

Look down the sparkplug holes w/ a light and see if you can piston dome. Look the carbon carpet on there or if you lucky a oem p/n (i.e. p28).

BTW using http://www.zealautowerks.com/dseries.html if he has the p29 pistons, z6 head and gasket he would get 12.05:1 but if he just slapped z6 head and gasket on a a6 block he has 9.95:1 motor. (PM6 for a6)

Describe or if possible get a picture of the carbon buildup on pistons and post for JD. He'll probably finger it out for you. maybe  :-\

Im going to look at it Wednesday. I am honestly thinking that once I check for CELs that will tell a story. The wiring looks like 5 year old did it.  Ill post back when I get more info.

If it's pinging mostly below 2500 rpms then he either has 12:1 CR or that's the worst carbon build up I've ever heard of on a Honda.

And, Russ pretty much covered it including being able to see the dome on the piston through the spark plug hole.

A shop should have a compression tester laying around, no?  That alone should tell you if its rather high compression.

And 12:1 can be run safe on pump.

All dome no quench stock cam D-series 12:1 isn't anything I'd seek out.  If it does have 12:1 he needs a cam.

This reminds me, I have a perfect odb0-1 dpfi-mpfi harness for a Z6 I should sell.

Definately try to get a ballpark on compression. Count the number of MLS headgasket layers used. I'll assume you've double-checked the cam timing, base ign-timing, and spark plugs/wires. And the ecu's ign maps.

Just checked the timing. Its hard to tell because there is some chinese crank pulley on it. I can't tell if the mark is TDC or 16BTDC. They shop guys are going to pull the timing cover tomorrow and verify. The car will not time right no matter what you use the reference line as. If you pull timing in the map the car throws a code 4. I think the cam timing is off a tooth.

What cam gear?  And is the distributor slammed all the way to the side?  We already know it's a stock cam, want to bet it's a Y8?

From what I remember from my Y8 its not a Y8 cam gear but its a stock gear. The may be though. Yes with the distro cranked to one side I can bring the mark to what I think is 18btdc and can't retard it any further mechanically.

Sounds about par for course.

I'm not going to offer any more insight at this point because, as you said, if you start working on the disaster then you'll be expected to finish the disaster.  Do not walk, Dave, RUN.

What does the casting marks say on the head?  ;D

And did you get a look at the top of the piston through the sparkplug hole yet?

Its a Z6 head. The pistons are PM7 pistons the girl said. The shop just called and verified the cam was 1 tooth off. They are putting it back together now.
