p&p question how much is to much?
« on: September 02, 2010, 06:18:19 PM »

Ok got bored one day and started porting my extra ls head figured i could pick up a lil flow by shaving the valve guides down anyone else do this? They came down pretty far in the port so i figured a little wouldnt hurt. Well then i wound up with this to much?

The guides are basicly flush with the head now dunno if i fucked if up or what but if i did oh well it's just a ls haven't touched the intake side yet.

p.s. the only reason i did this i has at delta a while back they did a b7 head for some guy and the guides where cut(Not this much) but thats what got me thinkin.

LOL.

The small cfm gained from cutting guides is not worth the decrease in longevity. A good valve job will have more cfm improvements than guide cutting.

i was thinking of doing bigger valves in a d series head just as an experiment, like b series valves, especially on a vitara setup with lots of clearance, if i ever do, ill post pics

Cut guides, no problem.

Cut 150K mile guides, shit that's already worn out, problem.

Fit some goddamn B20A/B21A1 intake valves and seats in there, port the bowl to suit, and be goddamn done with it.

As long as cutting the head to press in the new seat doesnt break through into water it would be fairly simple. measure new valve, use appropriate bronze reamer for proper valve stem clearance, install tooling for square cut for new seat, change tooling to 5 angle cutter, resurface.

it wont be a problem.  shave the guides down.

i know on my D series head, the guides are flush.

if you can taper the guide before its pressed in that might be a good idea.  i think i remember reading about B's having shorter guides than D's and how its more of an issue to shave the guides on a B, but i dont think its going to be a problem.

chances are a piston will meet the head before the guides wear out enough to serious effect the valve seal.

Anyone want to send me a D series head and some B valves? if someone is willing to pay the parts and shipping and can trust that ill send it back finished, ill spend some of my time doing this. or i guess if i come across a head for free locally ill do it and throw it up in the for sale section on the cheap, like, i just want to recover parts cost. parts being 8 new seat inserts and possibly guides all around.

If that didnt make sense, what i meant to say is... send me the shit to do it cause im a broke student and want to see it done, cause if it works good im gonna make myself one for my vitara motor(est completion 2034)

Thanks for the specs 92.  i was more wondering the amount of wear on the valves you have teg, so i can order a reamer and have it show up when the valves do.
