What do you NOGS know about stocks?
« on: September 24, 2010, 11:58:11 AM »

it seems pretty straight forward. Buy low then sell when it gets higher. I wanna start investing now that I'm alittle older. Is there a way not to be charged to buy and sell? Its just a thought but I can't seem to find any info in laymans terms

That they're unpredictable.

I would be curious on what the cheapest/best trading site is, though.

Pretty much all trading sites are priced just about the same. They will get their fees in one way or another.

of course they are unpredictable and its a gamble, but have been watching some companies and its obvious when shit is gonna drop. Bp for example dropped alot because of the oil spill in the gulf now they are slowly going back up as people stop caring. Toyota dropped because of the deadly dbw. They are going back up aswell, and as soon as they come out with a new designed camry I'm sure they will go back up. Anytime a disaster happens with a large corperate company they are going to drop, and most will recover. That's just my thinking though. I'm sure some financial advisors will disagree

If you're trying to make an income, forget it. You have a better chance of losing than gaining. If you're trying to build long term wealth, there are much safer options than day trading. If you realistically have a reasonable amount of money to invest, talk to a financial advisor.

Your concept of how the market works is a little over simplified. Yeah BP is going back up, but quarterly reports are going to show a reduction in cash flow as well as a reduction in assets that they sold in order to cover the "fund". If people are nervous about those things, then the price will fall.

I dont have serious money to put into this just was thinking maybe throwing a couple hudred at it. I'm not thinking of making big finacial gains or any thing. If I spend a hundred and make fifty I'll be happy. I was just thinking of making some extra walking around money really.

ROFL

Yeah.

Everything is simple when it's simplified.

How to build a RWD CRX:
1. Take out the old engine.
2. Put in the RWD drivetrain.

Pretty straight-forward.

I would strongly reccomend forex over equities if you're dirt poor which you are. I was able to casually pay bills with forex tech/intraday trading during my last year of school and I did really well with the money I put into equities but the fees and attrition ate it up since I only had a couple thou to invest. Also henry henried me for a nice miss. But with forex you don't have fees you just have to beat your spread and if you move quickly and utilize the maximum leverage offered by your broker, you can make quick money (and lose it just as quick). I was investing my 10$/hr wage and moving 100k+ lots which is the only way to make money. Unlevered = don't bother unless you have 10k+.

For equities go tradeking, for forex take your pick of smt4 friendly brokers. Buy low, sell henry.

What do you feel like your ROI was considering the amount of research you did involving Forex? Did you ever do a profit per hour analysis short or long term? The reason I ask, is I'm wanting to dabble with some liquid, but am looking for an avenue that will minimize loss with minimal time invested. More of a gambling situation, just better odds than the casino gives.  :D

Fister, I kept spreadhseets on and off, I can give you relatively accurate info when my travels are over in october. If you want to play the game it sounds like, give binary options a shot. You have to be right something like 80% of the time to be profitable, but its definetly more of a straight gamble, extremely liquid, and allows you to act on intraday/week hunches.

I would never do it but that's just because I feel I can make better use of my money, once I have some again. I did a monte carlo analysis of binary options with current volatility ratings and depending on the day you havre to be right 15 to 30%more often then with straight shorting but its quick and easy and occasionally offers interesting opportunities for low dollar amt investments.

if you only want to spend a couple hundred then do a little research and go to vegas. play blackjack and make a few bucks on the few hundred you want to invest. use your profits for coke and whores.
you don't invest in stocks or socks with only a few hundred.

Get the fuck out of this thread.

Only thing I know about stocks is whay I have learned via the Virtual Stock Exchange.

BP, Sprint, Ford, and Apple have made me steady gains so far.

 :P

EDIT:  Just looked at Google's track for the past week, and now I am kicking myself for not buying any.  Holy fuck!

Some people on this board may foolishly believe they have something to lose and stop doing this sort of thing after completing a degree.

Others know better.

Some things I have learned after studying investing for some time. There is a difference between investing and trading. It's like everything else if you put enough time in you will get good results. Investing is not a part time thing though, you have to treat it as going into business for your self or it's not worth doing. Most people will be best served by indexing their money over long periods in a tax sheltered roth IRA and avoiding management fees and trading costs and taxes.

The idea expressed about buying companies that are out of favor by the OP is very valid and is how I invest for myself. The trick is to know what the value is, and to know if the company has a strong enough financial position to survive. If your interested a very good basic book was written by Benjamin Graham called The Intelligent Investor which covers all the basics of value investing. Seth Klarmann wrote a good book that is more current called Margin of Safety that sells for like 1000$ but you can get a pdf off the net.
