I have an Optrel Satellite and a Miller Elite digital. The Satellite is a better fab hood, and the digital is a better welding hood, especially for low amp or chassis work with tig, or anywhere that may have something between you and the weld. I have used speedglass hoods as well, but never owned one, they are a good product as well.

The satellite holds up a lot better to being worn well grinding, and being tossed around. It is more like a hammer, vs the Elite digital which is more like a dial indicator.

speedglas 100's are pretty cheap and work great for just about everything
its what I use at work and the only time I have seen the bright light is when you are welding overtop of something at a really bad angle or forget to turn it on

Cheap helmets give me eye fatigue, they just switch too slow.

personally if i couldn't afford a good auto dark i would rock a cheap non auto hood. Hell you can get a jackson for cheap and later buy just the auto dark lens. and install that in the hood. I did that before i bought my speedglas. worked for a while too.

I keep an old fiberglass pipe liner, around for a few reasons:

-Overhead, it does a much better job of keeping you from getting burnt
-For when niggers are around and want to watch someone weld. (for the life of me I can never figure this out it is like watching paint dry)
-To remind me of where I came from, and where I am trying too keep from returning too.
-If on some chance both the auto dark helmets batteries go dead at the same time, I still have something to use.

- As a substitute mallet.

This, except my version of the old pipeliner is a non digital miller elite :P
