School me on draw through carbs
« on: October 17, 2011, 01:44:23 AM »

I know carbs suck, but it's what I got and fuel injection is not free.

Victim is a 80 Yamaha XS1100 that I want to boost because it's slow.

I have been reading a lot, but wanna see if any of you guys have experience with this type of setup.
Apparently I have to run a carbon seal on the turbo and backfires will ruin my day.  :'(

Fuel injection is free.  Talk to Fred of FreeEMS and tell him I sent you, with a name like FreeEMS I'm sure he's happy to buy everything for you out of pocket.

That'd be cool, but then I have to buy injectors, a fuel pump, and other shit. I'll go to fuel injection when I get some more money and get fed up with the carbs.
Would really like to make it work with the carb. Not looking for insane power.

Most junkyard cars' (from the 90's) fuel pumps are the same in the sense you have a inlet w/sock, hose barb outlet, and a DC motor. Civic injectors will handle 40whp per injector. Newer civic/rsx injectors will do over 55whp each when decapped.

I put together my fuel injector setup for under $20, including used pump, rail, hoses, and filter. You will probably spend as much time reconfiguring a carb as you would getting a "not insane power" mpfi setup rolling from Fred.

IMO carbs are for go karts and hill billies. And even now kart guys are testing fuel injection.

I'll look into injection. I'd actually prefer it, but carbs are readily available to me. Although a draw through system doesn't really need any changes to run a turbo application except jetting. It's the blow through carbs that need a lot of changes.

No, I'm sure Fred would buy all that stuff for you.  If he doesn't it's not FreeEMS, now is it?

This thread makes me want to run fuel injection on my lawnmower.

The main problem with 1 & 2 cylinder apps is they act like ITB's. It's a problem for people who learn to tune on the interweb.

And I was gonna add that I never seen someone try it, but figured nobody would notice.

A basemap for an unknown MAF/motor combo would be a prob for most people.

Trial and error. I can't imagine it would be too difficult.
