Ruled out alcohol?  What about the likely biggest threat: cellphones?  There are other possible explanations, but most of the lane-migrating I've seen has been due to fucking phones.  Check her Facebooks, SMS, etc, and see what she was doing around the time of the crash.  If she was, charge her.  I'll be honest and say I haven't been innocent of the crime, but my process is usually: Can it wait?  If yes, fuck it.  If no, is there any traffic around that deserves my attention?  If yes fuck it.  If no, a majority of my attention still goes to the fucking road, unless there's a stoplight coming up which I'll wait for.  The no-phone-while-driving laws don't really change anything, but I'm glad they're on the books simply so there's something additional to charge people with when they fuck up, assuming an investigation is even done.  I'd like to see phones' radios disabled over a certain speed.

Probably was phone related since it was a juvi. Sad, now 2 people's lives will be hanging over that kid forever.

Honestly though, most roads have shoulders - they are there for a reason. There has never been a time I couldn't afford 2 minutes on the shoulder, and no call/txt I couldn't afford to miss.

I'd be surprised if in the future insurance companies double kid's premiums if they don't have speed-disabled phones.

The bad thing about disabling phones over a certain speed is there are probably some instances where it'd be a safety benefit, as unusual as that sounds.  If someone is chasing you, you don't want to pull over to call the police.  Because of this honestly very rare situation, I doubt it'd get passed.  Wait...it could only allow emergency calls!  (win)

You're right about the shoulders, but honestly I'm too scared of someone hitting me to pull off the road -- for instance someone could be coming texting and just veer a couple feet off the road.  I've witnessed it.  However, there's almost always somewhere to pull off the road.  It could have been a number of other things that caused the accident, but as you said it's a juvi so I would immediately assume a cellphone.

I feel bad that a kid could potentially fuck up their life by something as seemingly innocuous as using the phone while driving that doesn't result in an accident 99% of the time, but with as easy as it is to just not do it, I don't feel too bad.

Damn kids.

speed disabled phones might sound like a good idea, but that shit would hinder as much as help.  Think about not being able to use your phone as a passenger in a car, bus, or a train?  What if you needed to contact someone immediately and they were going to fast to accept your phone call?

doesn't result in an accident 99% of the time

I also heard if you fire a rifle into a packed stadium from 1000 yards away it won't result in a death 99% of the time.

The problem is the sheer volume. Even at 1/100000 per text, that will only take a few dozen hours of driving for many kids.

How about we punish people for the crimes they commit, instead of limiting their freedom based in what might happen. Until you cause harm to another person, there's no reason to have a group of armed thugs taxing people for "endangering the public". The problem is, the world is and always has been a dangerous place, but the pussification of our society has resulted in laws that trade freedom for the illusion of security.  Speed limits on phones will be circumvented and people will continue to wreck their cars just fine without cell phones to blame it on. How about we just quit being bitches, recognize that life is dangerous, and punish people after they commit a legitimate crime, not before.

I guess I've just been ran off the road, on top of witnessing an accident caused by a dumb bitch on a phone, that I'd rather give up that freedom.  You don't need to use the phone while driving.  You would support watching TV while driving?  It's not much different, and there have been "studies" showing people are more dangerous using their phone while driving than being drunk.

drinking and driving have caused a lot of deaths and injuries. Lets all ban together to outlaw drinking.
I'm sure people have veered off the road from drowsiness should we make a mandatory nap time?
I've veered before because there was an animal on the road. Do you think we should put electric fences along all the roads so nothing can wander on to them? I think we should.

Wow, you're being quite the retard.

I never said ban cellphones, just like I never said ban drinking.

Drinking and driving don't mix, and neither does using the phone while driving.

that's exaclty what you said just not in so many words. your point is that cell phones should be disable at a certain speed (aka Banned) as that would be the only way to keep people from being distracted by then while driving. with that logic the only way to keep people from drinking and driving would be to ban alcohol.

Prohibition doesn't work.  You can't prevent people from making alcohol.

Technology allows for cellphones to disable themselves above a specific speed.  For people with half a brain, it can be circumvented, but the people with half a brain aren't the ones I'm concerned about.

Dollar store logic does not apply here.

Yes I need to talk on the phone while driving. Sometimes I need to eat or drink coffee. And if I can take a shit out the window without causing an accident, I should be allowed to. You want to give up that freedom? Great give it up. Don't do it. But the minute you tell me I can't because you don't "feel safe" is the minute I tell you to get fucked. Drunk driving laws don't reduce drunk driving and your bullshit cell phone laws wont amount to fuckall aside from fattening the police bankroll. You wanna make a difference in people's safety? Get rid of insurance and force people to be responsible when they fuck up.

I agree with klyph to a certain extent. I don't think insurance needs to be gotten rid of. I also don't think my rights should be taken away before I impinge on someone else's. the fact is driving is not safe. If for any reason you feel unsafe driving then simply not driving might be a solution you might want to look into.

Speed limits on phones will be circumvented and people will continue to wreck their cars just fine

So we'll compromise. Anyone that is caught circomventing phone rules AND has a car accident get sentanced to death by crash test dummy. ;D

We let the stupid sheep take out caustic house loans, and look where that got us. There are so many examples were letting the people choose their fate doesn't work, and same for removing that choice all together. There are only TWO options: guide the stupid sheep into a safe path (limit freedoms), or edjucate the sheep so they can actually make the right choice. Unfortunately, our society is more profitable with the former.

It comes down to giving stupid people freedoms they don't deserve. Like Jorsher said, it's the stupid people I worry about killing me.

in a few years you wont even be aloud to drive your car they'll all be auto pilot and run 20 inches from each other on the highway and you'll have to have regular maintenance checks and lots of other bullshit.

Right, because not driving is a much more logical solution than not using the phone while driving.

Again, the alcohol thing is a poor example.  Limiting functionality of phones above a current speed is feasible and doesn't cost a damn thing to law enforcement.  In fact, it would law enforcement costs and insurance premiums.

there was some fucking study that said that cell phone driving laws caused more accidents cause now people are looking over there shoulder for cops when they are on the phone. while we are on the cell phone distraction laws lets get rid of roadside billboards. especially the LCD ones especially.. those are bright as fuck.

im all for getting rid of insurance. when someone gets into an accident with you.. you should be able to take them to court.. take there car on the fucking spot as collateral till you are reimbursed. dont like it? dont fucking drive.

ive always wondered why they dont let the govt handle car insurance. seems to me like if EVERYONE is under a mandatory govt car insurance plan then it cant fail.. then people can use all the money they save on car insurance to go out and get decent medical insurance

In order for this to be effective all phones would be required to have their GPS turned on at all times which would cripple battery life. Face it, aside from the fact that it's nanny state bullshit that makes you LESS safe in an emergency, the amount of money the govt would spend to legislate and implement this would go 10 figures before you could blink. Considering you MIGHT save a FEW lives, its not fucking worth it. NEXT!
