Up to the point mom stepped in, dad had gone overboard.  Mom was fair and in control of herself and saved the situation by making the girl submit to one lash - the situation had become fucked up, but the message could still be saved from the wreckage and she tried.  After that point I agree that it turned into clearcut child abuse.

I've never raised a hand to my kid.  Kinda wish I had.  She's not gotten into any life changing trouble, but got really angry recently and told me I've been right about everything I predicted about people and the world.  LOL how do you respond to that?  If I'd paddled her a bit so that fear kept her out of trouble so that she grew enough to see the mistakes her friends made I don't think she'd be so angry with me.

Way overboad, and I got the belt quite a few times myself!!!!

1) was playing in a trench for waterlines, the kinds that are known to cave in, dad work for the gas company, I got 3 lashes.

2) stealing money out of mom's purse to go play video games at the arcade. $1-2 was fine but I took a $5 once. 10-12 lashes on a bare ass, I pissed myself. Consider Dad grew up very poor, stealing was the worst thing I could do.

However, two days later I did start getting an allowance.

Mom was a school teacher, she knew how to use her Teacher's Pet. Nothing worse that getting wacked with a paddle from your mom.

I ONLY ever spanked my son once, and it was on Xmas day. He was about 1.5 or 2.5 years old and shit himself from one swat of the hand. Your first sentence is contradicted, completely, by your second.  I had the shit whaled out of me which is why I haven't raised a hand to my child.  Honestly?  After watching this video I get a strong feeling that the best path is right down the middle.

Because I don't wanna be the invasive parent like my fucked up ex-wife is? That is issue still haunts my son and his wife so I give them room. Mind you they live in the same trailer park not far from Dave.

Since me and the ex split, my son has did his own thing, quite well I might add lately.

FYI: the plan is for my DIL to take over my morning route while I babysit(spoil!) said grandson.

Alright, that I can respect *completely*. You've recognized a problem and refuse to be a part of it.  All the same you're not going to be here forever... 20-30 more years easy, but I know gout has given you a taste of your mortality.  You can be proactive about things and let them know you'd like to be there a little more, and that you just want to hang out with the kid(s) and not undermine anyone by playing parent.  I can't think of any couple that couldn't use with some free child care.
