94 SOHC Civic Turbo Build
« on: November 21, 2011, 01:36:25 PM »

Hey guys, my names Liz and I'm new here, but I'm starting my little project on my civic and figured it'd be good to have a place to look for information and ask for it :)
I'm from good ol' ohio.

Some background on my car, my brother is really into hondas and back in like 2004 he had his 92 civic that he turboed and in 2007 he put a GSR in it and also turboed it. Now that he's in a University though his car still sits at home here so he doesn't mess with it much right now. He made 433whp in 2008 and its been like that since and still runs great. Some day I'd like to pass it, not sure if I'll do that with the single cam though.

Anyway he got me into cars and last year I got my license and found my 1994 Civic EX coupe, and I love it! It has 142,000 miles and no rust whatsoever. I wanted to turbo it but simply didn't have the money when my parents bought me the car as I just started my job. I've managed to save up money over the last year though.

So here's my parts list of what I have so far:
HF Manifold and Adapter Plate - left over from my brother's sohc setup.
Evo III Small 16g Turbo
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
720cc Injectors - also were my brother's
Trans /w LSD, rebuilt 4,000 miles ago - also was my brothers. Also have my trans too which still shifts perfect.
3" Downpipe from brother's setup also.
Ebay 3" Catback, had to modify it a bit to fit the downpipe but it'll work.
Autometer Phantom Boost Gauge
Autometer Phantom Oil Pressure Gauge

So heres what I hope for some advice on.
Clutch - my eventual goal is 300whp so I'd like to buy something I won't have to change.
Wideband - thinking the AEM UEGO
Tuning - I really want hondata but If I get that it'll probably be about 2 months before I'm able to have the car finished. Just wondering if I should go ahead with chrome or something first until I can afford the hondata.
Intercooler Setup - I figured I'd just get an Ebay FMIC and fit the piping myself, but are there any good kits I should look at instead?
Godspeed 38mm Wastegate
Stock DSM Blow Off Valve

I think I covered everything I'm wanting advice on so far.
I'm going to run a fully stock motor go for 200whp for now.

My brother is home every other weekend and will help me, although he's about to get out of class for christmas break, and we're going to finish up anything I have left. So I'm trying to get everything together and have started installing what I can.

Thanks for any help/advice!

Liz, I take it you are still HS, so I'll help a bit but, I also recommend looking at the Noob of the Year thread in the F.I. section, and follow example.

As for the Hondata, for the money are better of getting Crome Pro, EcTune or Neptune. Hondata is an overpriced/overhyped setup.

AEM UEGO will work but there is better WB for the money and less headache for the eventual fail you will experience from it.

Sound like you are on a little bit of a budget, so I would look at 14point7 SLC or a used LM-1 first.  :noel:

Clutch, most would say Mike at LSD motorsports would be your best bet. I have had really good luck on using stage 3 or stage 5 XTD clutch and lightened flywheel.

Running with a full stock motor at 200whp will be doable.

I run a d16z6 (stock) with a 84cid supercharger and 12psi above 5k to 8k rev. with no issues.  :noel:

Okay I only looked at the AEM because it's what my brother had and I'm familiar with.
I just searched and found an innovate LM1 for $130 with everything, might pull the trigger on it.
Yeah I am on a budget :(  Not much time for work. I have about $1600 when all is said and done. And about $300 is going to my brother for everything he's practically giving to me.
You reassured me about chrome, definitely will probably be using it for the time being.
Are the comp clutches any good? I found one on another site that supposedly had 2000 miles on it, looks great, for $250. It's a comp 3 clutch. Looks like they sell for about $400-425 new.

I'm also debating putting money into a set of drag radials, but my all seasons have seen better days so I figure I should probably put the money to better use.

Also, is a fuel pressure regulator very needed at the 200whp power level?

Thanks for all the advice, really helps me out!
and whats a troll post

oh and sorry i think i put this thread in the wrong area  :-X

Also heres a picture of it. I'm at school right now so i dont have access to many pics, but then again i really dont have a lot of pics of it but I'm sure soon as I start really getting underway on the build i'll have a lot.

heres a crappy picture i took with my phone in like august when i had it all nice and clean

I understand the drama of the PGMFI vs. Hondata dispute. But I hate to say that S300 is not overpriced or overhyped. I havent used eCtune, but the comparison with Crome and NepTune, it couldnt be more misleading. Im actually very happy with my S300, still, and its only 100 more than NepTune or eCtune. I had so many issues with NepTune, and I dont think I would ever recommend Crome, unless you have friends/tuners that have the hardware to tune and burn you a chip. Otherwise, once youve invested in the hardware to actually use Crome, youll have wished you went with a more capable and supported software.

I know a lot of people using the AEM Uego, with no complaints. But there are definitely better options out there. I had issues with my Innovate LC-1, but I think that had something to do with my wiring. Or possibly since I bought it second hand. I really like my PLX, but theyre a little more expensive. I myself want to try a 14point7 still.

I liked my Competition Clutch, but they arent cheap. For the power goals you are hoping to reach, an XTD should work great. I had one of their clutches holding over 400whp on my old ZC.

You wont need drag radials at 200whp, so dont waste your money. Just buy some cheap Kuhmos or something.

Now take the advice others are giving, and go see what people expect out of a n00b post. Post porn!

I think JD is going soft for not jumping all over the Hondata thing.

Liz Porn is a requirement, we do not discriminate we hate everyone equally. Also I doubt you will ever reach a power level at which an aftermarket fpr will ever be required.

Get over it.

[EDIT] And not that I give a fuck. But no one in my area tunes shit but Hondata. There is a NepTune dealer down south, but I dont feel like paying his over inflated prices to be tuned on basemaps that he stole from another tuner. S300 or AEM was pretty much my option. Car ran great.

Someone else on this site should build a single cam that goes faster on eCtune, NepTune, or Crome, to shut me up... Until then, I have no complaints with my Hondata. But I had quite a few with NepTune.
